Microsft Claims Millionth Zune Sold RRS feed

  • Question

  • Microsoft's Memorial Day surprise is that it's sold (not merely shipped) its millionth Zune. Robbie Bach, president of its Entertainment and Devices Decision, said that they'd not expected to accomplish this before June.

The sales have been enough, ultimately, to grab a 10 percent market share, a satisfactory, if not overwhelming, start. Apple's market share has slipped from "basically everything minus the Zen and cheap trash" to about 69 percent. Given that there were 100 million iPods sold by April, these percentages clearly refer to recent sales. A 5-year headstart counts for a lot.

With the red zune about to hit stores, this marks another opportunity to wheel out our Zune Color Picker (right), a devastating critique of how corporations wield social control through the aesthetics of MP3 players. Fight the power!
