  • Hello DT1978,

    Your Dell Vostro 220s computer has a Dell OEM SLP installation of XP Professional installed, but in order for this installation to "self-activate" the operating system needs to see certain data in the Dell motherboard's BIOS.

    According to these lines in the report, for whatever reason the OS cannot see the data:

    OEM Activation 1.0 Data-->
    BIOS string matches: N/A
    Marker string from BIOS: N/A, hr = 0x80004005
    Marker string from OEMBIOS.DAT: Dell System,Dell Computer,Dell System,Dell System

    OEM Activation 2.0 Data-->
    N/A

    [There is something unusual about the computer because IIRC the Vostro line was released by Dell as a line of Vista-capable small business computers, so one would expect a Vostro computer motherboard to also have the OEM Activation 2.0 data embedded as well.  It is possible that this computer shipped from Dell as a "naked PC" meaning that it never had a Windows license and shipped with an uninstalled copy of an Open Source OS like Linux or BSD.]

    Plan B for this situation is to run the product key updater utility http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=45668 to change the installed product key to the Windows XP Pro product key that is printed on the computer's Certificate of Authenticity (CoA).  That should work if the CoA is for Windows XP Pro.

    If there is no CoA, then the computer was likely a Naked PC and does not have a Windows license, so one must be purchased and installed.

    If there is a CoA but it is for a different Windows such as Vista or W7, then you would still have to purchase an XP license as the mechanism for using a Dell OEM SLP license for XP on this machine is broken.

    I also have to inform you that your installation of Office Professional 2003 is a Volume Licensing installation that is a valid license ONLY when used by an organization that holds a current and valid Volume Licensing Agreement for the use of the software.  If you are an individual consumer or very small business, it is unlikely that you would have such a VL Agreement.  If you bought this product thinking it was retail licensed software, you are a victim of software piracy and/or counterfeiting.  Please see the FAQ for more information on the Office Genuine Offer and the Office Complimentary Offer here:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EKNAC
