How to enter a new key once validation has failed? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I've got a validation issue with Microsoft Office on my laptop. Apparently the key it was installed with isn't valid, I don't understand how that could happen, but I don't care either.

I have my own Office key though that I used to use on my old computer (now deceased) and would like to use that instead.

How can I set that up?

Below is the output from the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool, if the problem can be resolved via that, then I'm also happy of course.

Yes, it is reporting that your installation of Office Enterprise 2007 is a nongenuine volume licensing installation.

Your idea of re-using an older already installed version of Office would be OK if the old Office is a full retail licence for Office.  Full retail licenses are permitted by the End User Licensing Agreement (EULA) to be moved from one computer to another.  To accomplish this, uninstall the nongenuine Office Enterprise 2007, restart twice, then install your existing Office from the genuine hologrammed discs and product key.

If this is an upgrade retail license, then you would only be permitted to move the license if the new computer has a qualifying license for a previous version of Office or Works already installed.  If there is no valid license installed, then there is nothing to be upgraded, therefore you cannot use an upgrade license.

If this older Office came preinstalled on the computer from the computer manufacturer and is an OEM license, then the OEM EULA does not permit you to move the OEM license from the old computer to any other computer.  OEM licenses are permanently tied to the computer onto which they are first installed and are not permitted to be moved to any other computer.  When the original computer dies, so does the OEM license.

The Office License in use on this PC is for Office Enterprise 2007 - which is sold only to organisation s for use on their own machines. The actual Key itself is not in MS's database of issued keys - so it has been produced by a hacker's KeyGen program.

To use your own key you would have to Uninstall the Office Enterprise, and then install a valid version of Office. Note that if your old PC came with Office installed, then it's almost certainly an OEM version, and is not transferable to this machine - you'd have to buy a new copy.

  • I don't know how the system could set up with such a key, it has been set up for me. I'm glad though that it's still fixable.

So, the steps are as follows:

    1) Uninstall office

    2) Reboot twice

    3) Use the proper CD to install it.

    4) Use my full retail key (or at least I think it's a full retail licence key, the company I worked for provided the key for home use)

I'll let you know how I get on with that. Thanks!

  • Hello JamesR404,

If the installed product key and discs were supplied by your company, then they are also using nongenuine software.
