Windows Vista Home Premium suddenly stops working? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Okay, so yesterday a message pops up stating that my Windows vista key is not genuine. But it was different then when I started up my PC, because it actually showed my desktop icons and background; Today there is just a black screen and the message that allowed me to go online. I have reason to believe that this problem may have originated from the fact I took my PC to the Geek Squad Services, and they said in order to fix it they'd have to replace the mobo. But, the assistant told me to restore it to factory conditions and then use the CD i had received when I first had bought my computer. Well, I did as he said and its been working for several weeks, about to months (I think). And now, computer is not working properly as stated above. If it helps my computer is an HP Pavilion a1719n.

Ah - the Geek Squad screw up again - it's nice to know nothing changes <g>
They installed a motherboard without the *required* BIOS markers to enable an OEM_SLP license to work .
You can either (preferably) take the machine back to them and insist that they fix it properly this time by installing the proper BIOS update (after all, you paid for the repair in the first place!) - or you can use the OEM_COA Key on your COA sticker to get it to work (assuming that hasn't already been used on your original motherboard).

You will have to activate by phone, if you change the Key to the COA one.
