Windows is not genuine after latest security updates RRS feed

  • Question

  • After installing all the new (June 14 and/or 15) security updates (both Windows 7 and Office 2003 / 2007) I am getting 'Window 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine'.  I get error code 0xC004E002 during initial load of the desktop after login, and error code 0x8004E10E when I try to validate after entering my correct product key.

I've seen in other forums that slui 4 can be used to get a contact number to report the problem, but for me that displays a dialog with choices: Buy key, Enter new key, and Contact Lenovo.

Given that I seriously doubt Lenovo has anything to do with this problem, I didn't try contacting them.

I also tried a system restore to remove the updates, and it initially worked (my normal desktop was displayed), but after a few minutes it decided it wasn't genuine Windows and went back to black background with the same 'not genuine' message.

I also ran MGADiag and got the following.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.  I do not want to have to wipe the drive on this computer and start over!

  • sfc /scannow gave this:
Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

reboot, Open IE 9, go to www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate, waited 2hrs, nada

Got these steps from another forum:
    1) Open an Internet Browser
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection servive may not be running, this is ok.
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start sppsvc
    10) Type: slui.exe
    11) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automaticly.

    Successful activation!

    reboot

    No more not genuine messages!

    Hooray!!

Click the Start Orb & type cmd.exe into the search menu.

Right click it & run as administrator.

Type the following command: sfc /scannow

Wait for the process to finish, when it's done reboot the system & try & Validate Online using Internet Explorer.

Well done - that would have been my suggestion, but I'd not seen the error message before, and wanted to wait until tb16's suggestion got a response before putting it forward.
