Server 2008 Standard R2 Validation error.

    Question

  • Up until 8/8 of this year, my server was working fine.  There were no update around that time.  The closet update was from 7/24.  I have read many forums and tried many things, but I cannot get the validation issue resolved.  I did find the SPPSVC.exe missing and the SPP Notification Service was not in the services list.  I got into my other 2008 server and copied and pasted the .exe files into the system32 folder.  I then rebotted the server and the issue was still there. The files reside in the system32 folder, but the service is missing from the list.   Reading your forums, I ran the diagnostic tool and below is the result:   Any help would be appreciated.

(Mods – please move this to the Vista forum)

Hmm – you have a couple of problems which may be related....
    1) A Trusted Store Tamper
    2) A ‘file not found’ error looking for C:\Windows\system32\linkinfo.dll

The two together immediately make me think that there may be a malware infestation  – so you need to ensure that you run a full system scan with a good AV, and a good anti-malware solution. The date in the timestamp is the date you should be looking at for time of the problem starting – 19th July!

There is a specific malware which creates a spoof linkinfo.dll file...

I suggest that you ensure your system is clear of all infection first – then come back is you are still having WGA problems.
