Outlook Client (2011) for On-Premise Configuration Fails RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have an on-premise installation of CRM2011, patched with rollup 2.  We are unable to configure any client plugin, and are getting the same errors in the installation logs.  These are on on-domain computers.  We had originally configured for Claims and IFD, but have disabled that until we can get this resolved.

    The organization list pulls up successfully, but about 1/2 through the configuration process, we get a generic error with a log error of:

    15:58:05|Verbose| Method entry: Microsoft.Crm.Application.Outlook.Config.OutlookConfigurator.InitializeMapiStoreForFirstTime

    15:58:20|  Error| Exception : Server was unable to process request.    at Microsoft.Crm.MapiStore.DataStore.WaitInitialized()

       at Microsoft.Crm.Application.Outlook.Config.OutlookConfigurator.InitializeMapiStoreForFirstTime()

       at Microsoft.Crm.Application.Outlook.Config.OutlookConfigurator.Configure(IProgressEventHandler progressEventHandler)

       at Microsoft.Crm.Application.Outlook.Config.ConfigEngine.Configure(Object stateInfo)

    15:58:20|  Error| Exception : Server was unable to process request.

    ====================================

    We have re-installed the server, complete with a new configuration database, imported our previous org and tried that.  We've also tried a new org on the same server.  Our next step is to create a whole new environment, but I have a feeling we are still going to run into this.  Any ideas?

  • My problem turned out to be a customized site map.  Who'd of thunk.  I've restored the default sitemap for now and will add back a link at a time until I figure out which one was the trouble-maker.

  • I am having the exact same problem, however, I found a workaround. See if this works for you.

    Give the user you are trying to configure the client for the "System Administrator" role in CRM. For some reason, this will allow the client to configure. You can then revoke that permission afterwards, and things seem to still work with the Outlook client.

    I was trying to configure the client for users with a very base security role in CRM. The trace logs were showing errors related to not having necessary permissions, so I added them as I went (prvReadOrganization, prvReadUserSettings, prvReadTeam, prvReadRole, prvReadUserQuery). Once I got to this point, I started getting the generic error you were seeing. On a hunch, I gave the user the System Administrator role, and the client configured fine. I then revoked the role, and tested the client with my base security profile. It seems to work as expected.

    I get the impression that this is a permissions issue, although, the trace logs don't indicate as such. I was clearly missing some permission that the system administrator role had that is required to configure the client. Unfortunatley, the generic error is misleading.

    Maybe Microsoft can shed some light on this one? This is not a viable workaround for those of us with 100's to 1000's of users. :)

    Hope this helps!

  • Unfortunately this isn't our problem; both people troubleshooting have system admin roles from the beginning.

  • I assume you are using Outlook 2010? Were these machines upgraded from Outlook 2007 by chance?
    Thursday, July 21, 2011 4:36 PM
  • Yes, we are using Outlook 2010.  On most computers that we have tried, Office/Outlook 2010 were installed on a clean machine, no upgrade.  However, when we roll this out, most computers will have been upgraded, so if there are issues related to upgrades that could also cause connection trouble, I would really appreciate learning about them ahead of time.

  • For future reference: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2500375

    I'm afraid I'm not much more help.  I'm having my own issues with 2011 client in a similar deployment as you. While I have been able to get the client to "work", I am seeing consistent errors in the trace logs, and some functionality isn't working (tracking emails in CRM for example). I think there is still some fine tuning needing to be done on this client. :)

    If I think of anything else, I'll let you know. Best of luck.
