Windows XP Product Key issues RRS feed

  • Question

  • My hp Compaq d330D DT had XP Professional installed on it.  Suddenly I started having problems like " PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, check cable, non system disc present or disc error" etc.  I could not resolve this issue so I decided to change HDD on this machine.  I did not have the original XP installation disc so I obtained a new one with SP2 included.  During the XP installation process I used the original XP Product Key (PK) number from the original XP sticker on the machine.  This was rejected.  So I used PK number from the new XP disc.  No problems thus far and all went well.  Genuine on-line Validation of this installation failed and I am prompted to purchase a Genuine Windows License.  This disc was purchased from a reputable retailer and was delivered in a sealed pack with all the MS hallmarks.

Can some one please advise how and why I can not revalidate the original PK from the sticker using any other XP disc.  Secondly I am at complete loss to understand why my new XP disc with all the MS hallmarks and siver stripes on the pakaging is a counterfeit when it went through successfully and fully with the installation procedure?

Please help any one, I am a genuine fella not a counterfeit.

  • Carey, you are brilliant.  Thank you ever so much. I send you a kiss and a hug, what else can I say.  I was going mad having bought another XP disc only to know through validation process that it is not a genuine product.  There is every MS halmark on the disc and the packaging so how one find out what is genuine and what is a fake.  I will sleep better tonight.  Thank you again.

  • Thank you Noel, sorry but the download from the suggested link was unsuccessful.  Another well wisher kindly directed me to "Windows XP Product Key Tool" that worked to validate the Product Key from the original XP sticker on the machine.  But I am still anxious to find out the XP disc with all the MS halmarks delivered in a sealed package happens to be a counterfeit copy.  Thank you for your help.

It’s likely that the PS2 disk you acquired is either a Retail one, a pirated Volume License copy, or a Recovery disk.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
