Live Mesh Data Available Until April 20 (see post within thread for details) RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • First, let me be crystal clear that I'm blaming absolutely nobody on any data loss I may have encountered. Any excessively late behavior on my part is entirely my own.

Now, the closure of Live Mesh was announced early enough to give everyone plenty of time to react. As fate would have it, you still would realize the need of some of the files at the last possible momenton 31st March. Unfortunately, that was also they day when my Live Mesh client refused to sync new folders ("503 Service not available"), and Live Desktop was no longer accessible (even though it was originally stated that files would be unavailable AFTER 31st March).

So yeah, I did lose some data because the site actually closed a day early - or at least, the new www.mesh.com front page no longer provided a link to the Live Desktop, nor did I have a change to try a reinstall of the old Live Mesh client. Of course, all this would have been fixed if the decommissioning plan had included an easy option to "download all in a zip file", something that would have been the most trivial approach for Live Desktop users.

    Cheers to the new future!

  • I'm sorry that you encountered issues with the shut down of Mesh. It didn't shut down early, it shut down on 3/31 as scheduled. The communications sent out repeatedly over the last few months did say:

On March 31, 2011, the beta of Live Mesh will end, and the Live Mesh beta will stop working.

The next sentence did say that you wouldn't be able to access or sync files "after" March 31st, and it probably should have elminated the date or have been worded as: "after the service stops working at some time on March 31, 2011..."

  • I just saw this post on the Windows Live Mesh forums (http://windowslivehelp.com/thread.aspx?threadid=35bb955a-f1bf-42e8-9cb4-85b91259b81f) Notice the following part: If you had data that was stored only on the Live Desktop and not synced to any computer, that data is no longer accessible from Live Desktop. However, that data has not been deleted from our servers yet. To help customers who might have missed the deadline to copy their Live Desktop data before the service was shut down, we are working on a way to give you access to your data for a limited time. We will post more details on this soon.

So I guess you'll be able to retrieve your lost data.

  • I haven't seen this anywhere on the forums, so just to let you know (source: http://windowslivehelp.com/thread.aspx?threadid=cc717787-2585-4bc2-8aea-11a19c6f7dda)

Following up our 4/1 post: This is a notice for Live Mesh beta customers who had files that were stored only on the Live Desktop and not syncing to a computer. If you weren’t able to retrieve your files before the service was shut down, you can now access the files for a limited time by following these steps:

    1. Go to https://m.mesh.com and sign in with your Windows Live ID.

    2. Select your Live Desktop in the device ring.

    3. On your Live Desktop, open a folder that has files you want to retrieve

    4. Right-click each file you want to download and click Save as

Https://m.mesh.com will only be available to access data on your Live Desktop until 4/20. It can only be used to download files from the Live Desktop.

    Thank you for your patience.

  • Thanks again, Remco.

I modified this thread title and will pin it until the 20th so it is more visible.
