Anyone using /nopae in boot.ini on HP MediaSmart Server? RRS feed

  • Question

  • On my HP MediaSmart Server EX475, System Properties shows that Physical Address Extension is enabled (I guess automatically because the hardware supports it?).  System Properties also shows only 480 MB of RAM, although there is physically 512 MB installed.  I'm assuming (rightly or wrongly) that the other 32 MB is used by PAE.

Since this box only has 512 MB of RAM, I was wondering if I could use the /nopae switch in boot.ini.  I'm thinking that should allow me to use that other 32 MB for something else.  Also, I figure that the non-PAE version of the Windows kernel might be slightly more efficient.

Anyone have any experience setting /nopae on one of these boxes?  BTW, I am planning to upgrade to 2 GB, but I think that the same argument still applies.  Why run PAE when you don't need to?

    Thanks in advance.

  • I would recommend against turning off PAE. PAE, among other things, is required for hardware-based Data Execution Prevention to work.
