Validation step fails in Windows Update

Question
-
When I get to the validation step in Windows Update, it fails with code 0x80080101 and gives an option to validate again. On clicking this, it starts to show the help/manual validation page, but immediately redirects to a page saying:
Thank you for validating your copy of Microsoft Windows.
Click Continue to return to your previous activity.
Clicking continue takes it back to the beginning of the Windows Update process and the above cycle repeats.
Version is Windows XP Home, service pack 2. Diagnostics follow....

Malc,
The error code you provided means the installed windows isn't activated. In turn you must activate windows again. Please activate Windows XP by calling a Microsoft customer service representative. The Activation Wizard displays the toll free number that you can dial.
To contact a Microsoft customer service representative and activate Windows by phone, follow these steps:
1. Click “Start”, point to” All Programs”, point to “Accessories”, point to” System Tools”, and then click “Activate Windows”.
Or, click the Windows Activation icon in the notification area.2. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.
3. Click “Read the Windows Product Activation Privacy Statement”, click “Back”, and then click “Next”
.
4. Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box and then click “Next”.
Note: The number appears now and differs based on the location that you select.5. Once activation is completed and you receive the following message, click “OK”.
You have successfully activated your copy of Windows.
More information on how to activate Windows XP at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307890
Also you may reference the following site for various telephone activation centers: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851.If you are done with the activation, kindly proceed in validating the copy of your software by going to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine . Click “Validate Windows” button.
Please post again if you need further assistance. Thank you.

Malc,
Thank you for posting your diagnostic information. Diagnostic results help our team in determining the root cause of your issue. I have extracted a portion of your diagnostic results to review with you:
Office Status: 114 Blocked VLK 2
OGA Version: Registered, 1.6.21.0
Signed By: MicrosoftWe are sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. I can see right away what the issue is and why you are not passing validation for Office. Unfortunately, the product key used to install your Office Suite is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked per the request of the legal VLK holder. As a rule, VLK editions of Office should not be sold to individual consumers. Businesses, schools and governments normally use VLK editions for flexibility in installing many computers. Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP and MS Office are Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.
If you want to keep MS Office installed on the computer, then your best option is to participate in the Genuine Office Offer and purchase an OGA Kit. You will be emailed a Product Key that can be used immediately to "genuine-ize" your currently non- genuine installation of XP Pro, and then about 2-3 weeks later you will receive a genuine Office retail CD and CoA, which you can use to do a clean installation (recommended).
Also please review the Validation Advisor for further guidance at:
https://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/ValidationHelp.aspx
First, if this comes as a total surprise to you, please visit the retailer where you purchased the computer or operating system and let them know the operating system is a counterfeit copy. Please print a copy of the diagnostic report so you may show them proof for the VLK status. Request they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy.
Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is here to help protect YOU, our valued customer. It is important for more people like you to report piracy @ http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/default.mspx who have become victims. Microsoft legal will follow up on all leads provided. Submitting piracy reports will assist in stopping unscrupulous business practices. You may be eligible for free software if you have high quality counterfeit discs. We CANNOT determine the "Quality" level of non-Genuine submissions and cannot guarantee such a thing here on the forum. We have a 3rd party registered Cryptography lab who evaluates EVERY (really!) submission for the High-Quality Counterfeit replacement program - as they have a pre-determined subset of items they look for.
Again, we are sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise offload any data from the hard disk because a clean installation/reimaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive. Please don't hesitate re-posting if you need further assistance.
Thank you,
Stephen Holm, MS

The icon was not present in System Tools, but I did run the validation wizard using Start:Run. It told me Windows is already activated.
Referring to your other reply concerning the illegal copy of Office, I have now deleted that and will be speaking to the family member who gave me the laptop to fix! I ran the diagnostics again after deleting Office and the results are below:

Malc,
Thank you for providing us with your diagnostic results. Glad you are up and functioning again. Thank you for removing the blocked VLK Office. Many complications can occur running non-genuine software. There may be things pre-installed within the non-genuine software which you may not want on the system. Should you need Office I provided information you can purchase the Office Genuine Kit @ a reduced price. Here are a couple websites for you to review for the future:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine
http://www.microsoft.com/piracy
Here is a whitepaper which can explain some details of what may be packaged within non genuine software:

Did you contact the telephone activation center? The bottom of my first post I gave you a KB article which has telephone activation centers. The error code you mention means your product needs re-activation. Please reference the following KB article: Also you may reference the following site for various telephone activation centers: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851. This process is quick and should have you up and running. Please post back should you need further assistance.
