Windows Home Server Console Problem: Client and Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Recently, I am unable remote console connect from the client to the server. The server event log says HomeServerConsoleTab.DiskMgt.Dll problem error ID: 2315.  I can ping the server. Shared folders look fine.

From the server side, when I try to open the windows home console I get a warning message that the HomeServerConsoleTab.DiskMgt.Dll is blocking the opening of the console. It warns me that I may be able to get to the console. If I proceed, I get into the console window.

What's the problem? Are there any work-arounds?

  • This is occurring because of some problem that the Disk Management add-in is encountering. You should contact the author of the add-in to see if he can help you.

  • Hi Patrick,

The easiest way to troubleshoot this is to look at the log generated by the console.

    1) Remote Desktop to your server, attempt to open the Console. When you get the message asking you if you want to load WHS Disk Management, choose to allow it to load.
    2) If the console loads, change to the WHS Disk Management tab if you can and see what happens. Close the console.
    3) Regardless of whether the console loads, go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\Logs\
    4) Sort by date, and find the latest HomeServerConsole.xxx.log (xxx being a datestamp).
    5) Paste the contents of the log file here.

    Thanks.

  • Here is an earlier log file that goes with with the event logs that posted the 2315 error ID.

  • So WHS Disk Management took too long to open, according to that last log. It's not really doing a ton during that construction phase (I've never seen it cause that error before); was your server under a lot of load during that time?

Keep an eye on it - if it happens again, let me know (quickest way is to contact me via the the website in my sig).

  • Update

In the "Created at 3/17/2009 4:30:27 AM" log,  the scenario was the following:

I made a request to open the WHS console from the client.
The client displayed  that  'moving green stripe'. I waited for 2 minutes.
    Nothing happened. It never connected.

I gave up and rebooted the server.
I then looked at the Administrative Tools->Event Viewer-> Windows Server (???) and
saw the 2315 error ID and the association with HomeServerConsoleTab.DiskMgt.Dll

At that time, there was no heavy loads on the server. No back-up or file-transfer were going on.

    Thanks!
