FTP Server and Weather App on WHS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I saw the HP MediaSmart running Windows Home Media Server and thought this is perfect for answering my backup needs.  I was then wondering if it could handle other processes I run on another computer at home:

I have a computer up 24/7 which has a weather application (Davis WeatherLink) which grabs data from my outside weather station and writes the data to a file.  I then have a CuteFTP running which then uploads this file to a web server ever couple of minutes.  Could I setup WHS to handle this operation?

    Thanks!

  • In theory, I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to do that. It's unsupported, so you'll have to figure it out as you go, but since you have it working now I assume you're capable of that.

You'll have to connect to your server using (also unsupported) Remote Desktop to install and configure everything. Be careful when connecting to your server using Remote Desktop; there are familiar tools available on the server desktop that can cause a variety of problems. I would recommend one of two routes for storage. First (and preferable) would be to connect a drive which you will not add to the storage pool, and manage the contents yourself. This takes the Windows Home Server extensions to the operating system completely out of the equation for taht drive. If that's not an option, then you could create a folder on the D: partition, in the root, and put all your data there.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • So would it be best to just install a drive I have lying around and then install my weatherlink software to that drive?

I should also point out that I have to connect a USB Weatherlink module that receives the data from the outside weather station.  Would installing the drivers be a problem then also or does this work similarly to other Windows OSs?

  • The answer is "It depends." :)

If it's small, I see no reason not to install on the C: drive. If it creates a small number of tiny data files, you could put them on the C: drive as well. If it creates huge, multi-gigabyte logs on a daily basis, then you will want to put them on a different drive.

As for installing drivers, yes it's similar to other Windows operating systems, because it's effectively Windows Server 2003 under the hood. There are tools that you should avoid using: anything that changes file system, security, networking, or IIS settings for example.

  • I have done exactly this on my server and can tell you everything works fine.  Surprising to see another WeatherLink user on here!

  • Hi There;

I know this is an old thread, but hopefully one or more see this.  I have the new HP media smart server and a Davis Vantage Pro2 and would like to install (if that is not a bad idea) onto the WHS since it runs most of the day and I do rapid fire updates to wunderground.com every 2.5 seconds.  I am familar with remote desktop, but was wondering how I would go about installing the software from another computer?  Can I just run the .exe file from a drive on my main comp, since the WS doesnt have a cd drive?  The from there just plug in the Vantage pro into the USB port?

Thanks in advance and please excuse my ignorance, I just knwo that using RD on a WHS can cuase issues

Installing any app on WHS is unsupported and not recommended (at least not without testing out what ramifications you may have by installing it first).  In your case, you don't really have a way to "test" it because you're using a pre-built server (and installing just the WHS OS anywhere won't give you the same results as it will be missing pieces installed by HP).  Plus, you have the added complexity of needing a USB port.  You would be better off installing it on a client and leaving the server alone to do its job.  If however, you really want to do it, you can use RD to logon to the server desktop and install it there.

  • I use WHS on a server I built... I run a Davis pro2 as well and I also use Virtual weather station. I have them uploading to my website and to WU via rapidfire updates.

Im not sure how the hp box is setup but for me here is how it works

VP2 is setup via a serial cable into the server
VWS runs on the c drive
data is stored and uploaded from the d drive ( a partition setup by whs )

This has worked now for a year and the issues I have are this:

when the server reboots I need to restart VWS...normally I do this via a add-in called program launcher ( http://www.whsplus.com/2009/04/07/program-launcher/ ) but it can also be done using the advanced admin console plugin as well...

I have not been able to setup my station to start on a reboot yet... but im working on it...lol

I used a USB drive to pretty much do all my transfers of files to the server originally ( including the weatherlink.exe) ... I had to play around with the prot settings and com controls in VWS for awhile but it has worked since then ...
