How to restore user files from an XP machine to a Win7 machine? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We're migrating from a Windows XP machine to a new Windows 7 machine and thought the easiest way to migrate things would be to access the backup of the XP machine from the Win7 machine.  The problem is that with I open the backup and open the user directory under Documents and Settings I get a permissions problem, then I go into security elevation mode and try to gain access, but after a minute I get a message that I've been denied permission to access this folder and will have to use the security tab - I'm not sure how to do this.  The username/password is the same on both machines.  However since the backup is opened readonly I don't know if it is possible to change the permissions in the backup set.

I expect that this is possible since backups wouldn't be much use if you couldn't recover files on a replacement machine if the original box gets lost/stolen/destroyed.  Any clues?
