MacBook Pro running Windows 7 Build 7600 not genuine

Question
-
Have a MacBook Pro running VMWare fusion and its been running great. Today I get these messages about Windows 7 build 7600 not being genuine. A box pops up telling me to click to fix it or else Microsoft security essentials will be done in 30 days. Why is this happening. My cd is one I bought at my university student center. I have the code right here. Its a legit windows 7 ultimate and the disk says that it is genuine.

That means that you used an upgrade product key after performing a clean install of Windows on your BootCamp partition. An upgrade product key requires that a copy of Windows eligible for upgrade to Windows 7 already be installed on the partition at the time you install Windows 7. Do you own a retail (not OEM) full license copy of Windows XP or Vista that is not in use on another computer?

I purchased this copy at my university book store. They said it is Windows 7 Ultimate. They didn't tell me it was an upgraded version or anything like that. I do not own a retail full license copy of Windows XP or Vista. They said this disk was the full version of Window 7 ultimate 64. What do I do?Tuesday, March 1, 2011 4:31 AM

You are not going to activate it.
Your choices are to buy a full license version of Windows 7 or find a copy of XP or Vista (not OEM or upgrade). It might be simplest to go on eBay and buy a copy of XP Home full license. You can then assign the XP license to be retired by the upgrade Windows 7 license by doing a phone activation and explaining to the agent that you have a license eligible for upgrade, etc. You can also install XP or Vista on the Bootcamp partition and then upgrade to Windows 7. I would try the phone activation first. I cannot emphacize too much that the XP license MUST NOT be an upgrade license.
This is the kind of item you need (shortened) http://bit.ly/flIOOx
Beware of OEM copies called "full" by sellers. You want retail full.

Great... Thank you... I guess this means I got screwed by the bookstore. I'll purchase the XP then
call in to try the 7 upgrade as you say.

The upgrade license wording is that the user must own a qualifying license. It is not required to install for licensing purposes although the Windows 7 Setup is designed to look for installed software. What is required is to retire it (it sits on your shelf). I'm betting you can get around a reinstallation this way. If not, then you go through the installation c**p and get right with MS that way. If you get knocked out of the XP auction a copy of Vista will work equally well. Any old dog-eared full license will do. The command to force phone activation is 'slui.exe 4'.
