Cannot (re)install Live Mesh RRS feed

  • Question

  • I had Live Mesh running for months on my machine (Vista SP1), but with the last update it didn't start anymore.
Since then I have tried to uninstall Live Mesh, and re-install it, but it fails.

"After installing, it uninstalls itself autmoaticall and gives me the error:
    Live Mesh Service is unavailable.
    Please retry your installation later.
[80072F78] The server returned an invalid or unrecognized response."

    Can anyone help me?

  • Would you happen to be connecting via a proxy to the internet? Can you get into Windows Update? I had something similar with Windows Update that gave the same code - using the fix in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;885819 fixed that, perhaps it will help in your case?

Searching the net seems to indicate that it might also be a time problem - is your time synchronized correctly? Sounds silly to me, but you never know!

  • I'm having the same exact problem (re-installing). Yes, I do have privoxy installed, so I thought that might be it when I read this but I closed it and it still didn't work. Also tried closing AVG.

I didn't see a "fix" on that url. It was concerning ms update anyway. All it said was to grant permission to the ms update site..what url would I grant permission to for mesh and where?

My error (in case it helps):
    live mesh service is unavailable.
Please retry your installation later. [80072F78] the server returned an invalid or unrecognized response

  • I have same problem. I uninstalled Mesh about a month ago and when I failed to install it. I'm running XP SP3 and I set my location as Canada.

I did everything listed in the sticky thread "Live Mesn won't install/uninstall" however it's still not working. I also tried to connect my computer directly to the cable modem instead of the router but failed... Can anyone help me out plz? Thanks!

  • Are either of you using Avast Anti-Virus? A quick search led me to: http://the-network-guy.blogspot.com/2008/11/live-mesh-service-is-unavailable-error.html which indicates that disabling the Anti-Virus before installing solved the same problem for him.

  • Hi nachmore,

No I'm not using Avast Anti-Virus. I'm using OneCare and I've disabled its anti-virus and firewall... no luck...

though, not yet for myself. At least it's a common problem and therefore will probly be fixed sooner rather than later!

  • I am having the same problem as Arnout:

After installing, it uninstalls itself automatically and displays the following error:
    Live Mesh Service is unavailable.
    Please retry your installation later.
[80072F78] The server returned an invalid or unrecognized response.

I've tried to install Live Mesh client for the first time on three different computers with different operating systems - Windows XP SP3 32-bit, Windows 7 Beta 32-bit and Windows 7 Beta 64-bit.

The systems were clean installs without any antivirus or any other software installed.

Unfortunately, the result is the same on all of them.

  • Hey Iam77,

If you can please submit a bug on Connect for me and include your logs, we can get a better idea of what is causing the install failure that way.

    Hi,

Do you have either of the possible Servicing log files (see the How to Submit Bugs post for details on collecting the Servicing log)?  Even if Live Mesh completely fails to install, it should generate a Servicing log in the temp directory.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • Hi Ben,

I dont have a servicing log file or any trace of a live mesh folder as described in the "How to submit bugs" (searched for several permutations and found nothing). Apart from the downloaded installation file, the installation error message and the two logs from the adminsitrative tools/event viewer I cant find any useful info.

    thanks

  • Hi lam77,

That is very unusual indeed.  Have you tried downloading the installer again (perhaps something is wrong with the LiveMesh.exe you originally downloaded)?  Are you installing under an administrator account?  And you're double-clicking the installer (not, e.g., right-clicking and choosing to run as administrator)?

You might want to go ahead and open a bug (instructions) even without logs, and include the information from this post.  But I'm also going to pass this information on to our developers and see if they can spot the cause.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • Hi Ben,

Have tried to install with a different account, re-downloaded software,  etc etc....Have tried installing with a double click, run as administrator (error message comes up and stops install, something to do with not being able to run in elevated account), and also tried it through cmd

Is there no way of installing the software so that I may diagnose the connection/sync issue. At the moment as soon as it recieves its unkown response from the server it uninstalls?

    thanks for your help

    Hi,

I'm sorry for the frustration here.  One thing our devs have suggested trying is clearing out your IE cache (cookies, history, etc.) and running the installer again.  You may also wish to take a look at this sticky.  I'll keep working with our devs and let you know if I learn anything more.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • Hi Ben,

Will have a go at clearing the cache, removing any trace from registry and re-installing.

With respect to the sticky and the part that suggests installing from the cmd in "run as administrator", when you/your devs do this on your own computers dont you get an error message about the not being able to run the installation from an elevated account?

    thanks

    Hi Luca,

This refers to running the command prompt as administrator, not running the installer (LiveMesh.exe) as administrator.  That is, Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt should be right-clicked and run as administrator.  Does that make sense?

Please let me know if clearing the IE cache helped resolve the issue (I hope it did :) ).

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • Hi Ben,
the clearing of the cache made no difference.

Are there any specific settings I would have to check in the firewall to allow mesh to connect. At the moment it is set to allow everything on this computer and is running skype and logmein no problem..... but it would not download and install Mcafee antivirus from their website. The firewall is a Fortiguard unit

    Regards

    Hi Luca,

Have you opened a bug through Connect?  If so, please let me know the Connect Feedback ID so that I can continue to track this.  Also, I believe you already said that you could not find a Servicing log, but just to verify: If you navigate to the %temp%\Live Mesh (you can just type that in Start Menu > Run...), is there a Servicing log there?  Any failed install attempt by Live Mesh should leave that log.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

Thanks for reporting the conflicting application. Can you file a bug on Connect to report it there, too? Thanks.
