Shared Folders on Server only shows Users RRS feed

  • Question

  • I went to copy some files to my Music share and it did not show in the Shared Folder on Server icon on my desktop. I can only see Users which has three sub-folders under it and those are secured properly since I can only access the one with my user name. I have previously had access to the other shared folders and now they are not accessable.

Any ideas on where to look to fix this? I feel that it is a permission issue since I RDP'd into the server and looked at D:\shares and the only one with sharing enabled is "Users". How can I get the correct permissions back on all the other shares such as Music, Software, and Public?

    Thanks.

How can I recreate the share permissions? I am comfortable with setting permission, but do not know what the correct ones are.

    Thanks.

I would still strongly recommend a Server Reinstallation (as recreating the shares manually is unsupported and who knows what effect it will have on your server later on).  Not to mention, even if you do get it to work now, that doesn't mean making any changes to permissions in the Console in the future will populate down to the 2003 permissions settings the way it's supposed to.

However, if you're sure you want to DIY (and you are willing to accept the risks involved in doing so), the sharing permissions are as follows (NOTE:  This applies to all shares except the Users share):

The Administrators group (not the Administrator account) has full control on every share (so if your server name is SERVER, it should say SERVER\Administrators with a check box under Allow next to Full Control as well as the ones below it on each share).  The rest are based on what permission each user (including the Guest account) has on each share set in the Console.  For example, if John has Full on the Music share, Read on the Videos share, and None on the Software share in the WHS Console, SERVER\John should have a check box under Allow next to Full Control (and the ones below it) on the Music share permissions, a check box under Allow next to Read (and only Read) on the Videos share permissions, and not even be listed on the Software share permissions.

It sounds like your shares have been disabled (otherwise they will still be visible, even if you don't have access).  Frankly, I'd be more concerned about how it happened then how to fix it.

The only supported method is Server Reinstallation (and, since the shares are actually gone, I wouldn't be 100% positive that it will work; in theory it should, but I've never tried it and I don't recall anyone else ever posting that question here).  The other option, although unsupported, would be to create the shares manually then set your own permissions.  However, if you aren't really familiar with how WHS handles permissions, I would advise against it.

  • The shares still do exist on the server and do still show in the console with the correct permissions. I just can not access them from the shortcut on the desktop.

So what could cause the permissions to change?

To clarify: You can see the shares exist on the server (including opening the Shared Folders on Server icon on the desktop), but not from any client? If you go to D:\shares on the server, does each folder have a picture of a hand holding a folder?  Or are the shares visible from a client but you just don't have access?  If the latter, what is the exact error message you get?

Did you at one point have your Guest account enabled, then disable it and subsequently lose permissions at that point?  If so, please check Ken Warren's FAQ post here.  If not, what are the Security permissions on the share?  (Right click the share, select Properties, then Security tab and post the results here)

OK, From the client, from the desktop shortcut,  I can only see the "Users" folder. On the server, from the desktop shortcut, I can see only "Users", "Printers and Faxes", and "Scheduled Tasks".

If I go to d:\shares on the server, the only one with a hand showing that it is being sharing is "Users". All other shares are listed, but do not show the hand icon that they are being shared.

When I open up the console, all shares show in there. I checked permissions on each folder and all my users have FULL access to all shares except for their personal folders and Guest has NO access to all shares.

I do not get any error messages through the shortcut, the shares just do not show up in the shortcut on the desktop.

I tried to right click a share in the console and say OPEN, and I did get the error message: \\server\Music The network path was not found.

I have never had the Guest account enabled.

I am at a loss as to what happened here.

  • All but your Users share has been removed. I'm not sure how that could have happened, though. Have you ever installed anything using a remote desktop session or by logging in with physically connected monitor, keyboard and mouse? Modified folders, permissions, etc. that way? It may be possible to recreate/reset your shares and permissions, but since they are now disconnected from the shares, and I don't know how that will interact with Windows Home Server should you do so, I would prefer to see you do a server reinstallation/recovery. Do you have a home-built server, or an OEM unit from e.g. HP?

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • I will try to manually set the folder permissions and see if I can get it to work. I will also check it by changing permissions in the console and see how that affects things.

I will post my results in the next couple of day.s

    Thanks.

  • I did change the permissions back as kariya21 stated, but when I went back into the console and changed them, it caused problems. I gave myself full permission on the music share on the server. I could access it from the client with no problems. When I removed permission via the console, it took away permission. When I tried to put permissions back through the console, it did nothing. I could not reach the share any longer.

Unless anyone else has any suggestions, I am planning to do a server reinstall over the weekend.

    Thanks.

Did you logoff and logon after re-instating your permissions?  If not, that could be why you weren't able to get back in.

  • I did not logoff and log back on from the client.

I do think that I figured out the issue. I was using the actual user names to set permission on the sharing tab. I then started poking around in Computer Management and noticed that there are several groups that exist on the server. There are RO_x and RW_x where RO is read only and RW is read-write. I used these groups to set permissions on the shares and it worked. I then went into the console and change permissions and saw an immediate effect. I changed them back and everything still worked.

Just a note, there are many groups with the RO & RW namings and they are well described. There is one of each for each share and you have to make sure you use the correct ones.

If anyone else has this issue, just open an RDP session and go to Windows Explorer -> D:\shares. Then right click a share such as 'Music' and select Sharing and Security. On the Sharing Tab, click on the Permissions button. I ensured the Administrators group was allowed full control. I then added back in RW_4 group which matchs the group for Read Write on the Music Share and allowed full control. I then added the Guests group and Denied full contol. You must do this for all of the shares.

To see the list of these groups and their description, Right click on My Computer and select Manage. Then expand Local Users and Groups and go to Groups.

Make sure when adding Administrators and Guests that there is an 'S' at the end of the name. The groups have an 'S' where the user does not.

    User: Guest
    Group: Guests

Hopefully this will help someone else out if they have a similar problem to mine.

That's what you should be using.  That is exactly how it's set up after installation.

That's not how it's set up.  I would advise you to remove what you did and follow the instructions I explained before.  (Those groups are only used for the Security tab, not the Sharing tab.)  If you follow the instructions I gave you and it still doesn't work (after log off and log on again on your client), there is something wrong with your server.  You should forget what you did and do a Server Reinstallation instead.

You mean it worked for now.  Since you don't have the traditional settings, you may have issues with the permissions in the future if MS makes some changes.

Again, this is wrong.  No one else should follow these directions.
