Can't activate old XP Pro or install new XP Pro software

Question
-
I have a computer that originally had Windows Vista. This is an HP a6620f. The computer was partitioned and a copy of XP Pro was installed because that was required for the use of this PC. Everything ran fine for a week or so. The computer wasn't used for a couple weeks and the activation period lapsed and now we can't log in at all since it isn't activated. I tried to activate by phone since the key apparently wasn't valid. We have a lot of software in the office and that copy probably was put on another machine, so we purchased a brand new copy of Windows XP Pro in an effort to correct the issue. When I try to install this new software, it starts to go through some blue screen setup script and then says I can't install it. Any advice? There is nothing stored on this computer, so I would be happy to reformat and start from scratch, if I knew how to get that started without being able to get into windows.Wednesday, June 10, 2009 9:21 PM

Bank Techie,
Thank you for visiting us today :-). Have you called HP Technical support? When computers have an OEM SLP version of Windows installed from the factory the manufacture provides customer support. It appears this will fall outside the support scope for WGA. First I would recommend for you to visit http://support.microsoft.com . Next search for vista and xp dual boot setup. You will receive receive many Microsoft Knowledge Base "KB" articles regarding this subject. Also maybe use your favorite search engine or Microsoft's new Bing search engine located @ http://www.bing.com/ and search for vista and xp dual boot setup.
Take care,
Stephen

BankTechie,
I suggest posting your question to the “Discussions in Windows XP General” or the “Discussions in Windows XP Newsgroups” here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.general&lang=en&cr=US
Use the search feature and see if others have experienced the same problem. If not then post here and provide them with same background as you did here.
Also I would recommend for you to please visit Microsoft's Windows XP site located here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-xp/ . This site is full of great information which may help you with what you are experiencing.
Take care Bank Techie,
Stephen

Stephen-
Thanks for the response. I'm sure the initial problem was that I can't find the product key for the copy of XP I installed the first time. I did buy a new copy and would like to start fresh with that one and basically start from scratch and do it right. In the past when I've wanted to reinstall an operating system, I could turn on the PC with the windows disc in the CD rom drive it would boot from the CD and allow to repair or reinstall. When I try to boot up with the disc in the drive with XP, this does not happen. Can you advise?Wednesday, June 10, 2009 10:22 PM -
Sorry, I forgot to mention I have no use for the Vista OS on this computer and don't really want the dual-boot option. I would prefer to only have XP Pro available to run, without the partition. I have not contacted HP as I would guess they'd see this as an XP issue.Wednesday, June 10, 2009 10:24 PM

Thanks.... I will check out those sites and contact HP if I continue to have issues. Sometimes it's tough to find the right spots in Microsoft's help info, so these links should help a lot!
Have a great day!Thursday, June 11, 2009 3:00 PM -
I am glad the information has helped. Take care and have a wonderful weekend :-)

Hello Bank Techie,
At botup, computers from major manufacturers usually briefly display the key combination needed to change the default boot device order.
Typically it is F10 or F12.
