Microsoft Money 2001 asking for password to back up RRS feed

  • Question

  • Just loaded Microsoft Money 2001 CD to my new computer (Windows 8.1) and loaded OK but is now asking for password to back up my data transferred from my other Windows XP computer. I've never entered a password. Also, it looks like the version on my old computer is Microsoft Money Deluxe OEM edition version 11.0 which I created in 2008 (possibly from another CD but I can't recall if I did). Any help appreciated. Big Kev. Somerset

  • Microsoft Money version 11 is Money 2003 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Money).  Money 2001 can not open a .mny file created by a later version.  I suspect that the password message is a result of this incompatibility.

I suggest that you look at the second "sticky" post in this forum:

to download and install the version of Money that is appropriate for your area.  If you .mny file was created by Money 2003 you may need to do an intermediate conversion step.  Post back and let us know how you make out.

  • As Bill indicated, after you install Money from the downloaded file and use it to convert your *.mny file, it will leave a copy of your file in the same folder named something like *.m11 (if the new version is newer than the old version). M11 would indicate that the converted file had made by Money 2003. M12 would have been from Money 2004, and M14 would indicate Money 2005 made the file.

  • Bill, many thanks for advice above. I downloaded Microsoft Money 2005 from the link that you gave me and once I'd found the correct file to restore my back up all the data transferred beautifully. Although the 2005 version is different on screen, I'm sure that I will get used to it very quickly. Thanks once again. Kev Davies, Bridgwater Somerset
