System drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have built my own server with a intel core duo and 3 gig of ram

System drive 80 gig and x2 1TB hard drives for storage

Is it easy enough to replace the 80 gig system drive for a larger drive.

I have read a few forums, they state you can do it by imaging the 80 gig drive, the worry is the disk ID.

Would it be quicker to replace it and reinstall WHS.

Would i get stopped due to licence as it is allready registered

  • Why do you want to replace the drive in the first place? Should just be able to reinstall if required but may need to phone Microsoft if you have already activated.

  • Was Thinking of more storage capacity and higher speed drive as WHS only uses 20 gig of the 80 gig drive and the rest is used as storage i'm assuming of cousre

  • If it's just storage capacity you are concerned about, I would be inclined to buy a 2TB drive (circa $70 for a WD Green) and add it to the pool. As WHS runs constantly, a faster system disk is not needed. Only reason I can think of changing it is that if it's an 80GB drive it's old and may be unreliable. Yes the remaining space is used in the storage pool.
