software licensing service won't start RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've really had it.  Can someone here help me?  Microsoft support was no help.  This started originally in jan after a windows update, when I got the "not a genuine version of windows" stamp on my desktop.  I could no longer update windows.  Finally on my own I found the software licensing service wouldn't start.  Everything I tried from the forums didn't work.  I ran the diagnostic yesterday and it said my copy was genuine.  I just tried it again and it says invalid.  Can someone please help me, I am so sick of vista, nothing but problems.

    Hi Noel,

This is the complete message from the command prompt:

"The Software Licensing service is starting.
The Software Licensing service could not be started.

    A system error has occurred.

    System error 34 has occurred.

The wrong diskette is in the drive.
Insert *** (Volume Serial Number: ***) into drive ***."

    Thanks,

    Alex

    Try this:-
    Open Windows Explorer
    Navigate to the C:\Windows folder
Find the System32 folder, and right-click on it
Clear the 'blob' in the Read-only attributes option, and click OK (confirm if required)
reboot, and run another MGADiag report - post the result here

OK - now you need to change the product Key to one that is actually valid :)
The Key in use here is the Default (Keyless install) Key  - which is entered by default when the OS is installed without entering a proper Key. It cannot be activated
Go to the System Properties page, and at the bottom should be a link to Change Product Key - use that to enter the Key from your COA sticker on the case, and then activate the machine  - you may well have to activate by phone.

Please check that the Software Licensing service is set to startup type Automatic.

    Click on Start
    in the Search box, type
    SERVICES.MSC
    and hit the Enter key
Accept the UAC prompt that comes up
In the listing of Services, find the Software Licensing Service (SLSVC)
right-click on it, and select Properties.
make sure that the service Startup type is set to Automatic - click Apply if you've had to change anything.

    Then try starting the service.
    What is the result?

If you get an error message, please report back with the EXACT details.

    Alex

Not very informative - that message simply means 'Service was unable to start'!
Try this way instead - it may yield a better error message.

    Click on Start
    in the Search box type
    CMD
wait for the Search to find the file reference.
right-click on the found file, and select Run as Admin
In the resulting Command-prompt window, type

    NET START SLSVC
    and hit the Enter key
see whether you get a better error message this time.

  • OK - now you need to change the product Key to one that is actually valid :)

    Noel,

That worked, I was able to update windows, I've rebooted and the SLSVC has started with no problems.  Thank you so much for your help!  You rock.

    Regards,
