Why is my Outlook saying it is not genuine. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchase a full new copy of Microsoft Office Professional 2007 for Amazon. It arrived and is in the proper box with 2 holographic CD's and licence keys etc. It appears 100% genune and like any other I have seen. I installed it on my Sony Vaio GRT on that has I have just upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 Professional. Thi was only two weeks ago. This morning I turn it on and started Outlook and it reported the it was not genuine. Here is the output of the diagnostic tool.

What should I do now please?

Your installation of Office Professional Plus 2007 on your Sony computer is a nongenuine installation.  It is a volume licensing installation that was done with an Invalid Volume Licensing Key.  An Invalid Volume Licensing Product Key is one that was generated by software pirates using a program called a key generator, or KeyGen for short.  This product key was never officially issued by Microsoft, making it Invalid.

Normally, legitimate users of Volume Licensing editions of Office are associated with larger business, educational, or governmental organizations.  If that's you, please contact your organization's IT support staff for further assistance.

If your use of this installation of Office Professional Plus 2007 is not associated with a larger business, educational, or governmental organization, and you purchased the installed copy of Office Professional Plus 2007 thinking that it was a retail license for Office Professional 2007 to be sold to individual consumers (which you stated you purchased it on Amazon), it is likely that you are a victim of software piracy and/or counterfeiting.  As an individual consumer, you should never have been sold Volume Licensing (VL) materials such as the VL installation disc(s) and you certainly should not have received a Invalid Product Key.  You should have been sold Genuine retail licensed software.

If so, your first course of action is to confront your seller with this information and demand a full refund.  Remember, on Amazon you are offered goods from Amazon themselves along with independent sellers.  My guess is that you purchased not from Amazon themselves but from one of these independent sellers.

If the seller refuses to help, please file a piracy report at www.microsoft.com/piracy.  Also, depending upon whether you received "high quality" counterfeit materials, you may qualify for the Office Complimentary Offer or for the Office Genuine Advantage discounted offer.  Please see the FAQ here:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EKNAC  If you think that you qualify for the Genuine Office Offer, apply for the Offer thru the Learn More Online link that the OGA Notifier is displaying.

  • Thank you for the quick reply. I have looked at the packaging and compared it with the Microsoft Couterfeit Gallery and it is absolutley perfect.

The shaped box, holographic CD's, manuals and COA label is 100% identical with the torn edge and foil tape and appears far to good to be couterfeit.

I am a computer manufacturer and deal with Microsoft products all the time and this looks absolutley genuine. I bought this from Amazon UK for my personal laptop as we do not buy this version within the company. I will check my invoice to see if it came from Amazon UK or their marketplace. I know it was not a cheap copy as you find elsewhere on the web.

It there a human being I can discuss this with on a telephone as I do not want to accuse anyone of fraud until I am sure nor do not want pirated software on my computer.

I assume I have keyed the licence key in correctly nor is this a false activation caused by software confict that is becoming a common subject of discussion of the web?

    Kind Regards

    Richard

  • Hello Richard R Cook,

Yes, the current crop of Office counterfeits is very, very, well done.  Most likely "third shift counterfeits."

However, there is no doubt that you inadvertently acquired counterfeit software.  There are two dead giveaways:

    1.  The product key was identified as nongenuine due to being invalid---in other words, it's a keygen volume licensing product key.

    2.  The package, the CoA, and the discs all have Office Professional 2007 on them.  So, howcome the discs installed Office Professional Plus 2007?  See this chart for details descriptions of the components:  http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/FX102464411033.aspx

Office Professional Plus 2007 has two programs that Office Professional 2007 does not, Communicator and InfoPath.  Pro has Outlook with Business Contact Manager (BCM), Pro Plus has plain Outlook with no BCM.
