Running Genuine Vista Ultimate for 5 years, now getting message saying "copy of Windows not genuine" with black background

Question
-
Toshiba Satellite A215-S741 purchased new came with Windows Vista Home Premium. I updated to Windows Vista Ultimate. Laptop has functioned fine last 6 years. Now receiving the "copy of Windows not genuine" message. Tried to update Product Key to the Windows Vista Ultimate disk Product Key, but it would not accept it. Tried a System Restore but would not restore to a earlier version. Tried running Windows Vista Ultimate set up, and that even failed, only allowing the Custom set up that wipes out all your files. I've run the Diagnostic Report (see below).
Please advise how to fix.
Thanks

My standard response at this point is to uninstall Norton :) - completely! - and run the Norton Removal Tool to get rid of the dregs, then install MSE temporarily at least until we get the issue fixed (I dislike Norton intensely, so it's possibly a biased response!)
Did you try running the tool from a Clean boot?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135/en-gbBelieve it or not, there's actually a Fixit for the Fixit error!

The problem appears to be in the Licensing Store -
please try the following.....
Recreate the Licensing Store with the correct data.
1) Open an Internet Browser window.
2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
3) Find the file CMD.exe
4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
9) Type: net start slsvc
10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
11) Restart your computer twice.
You may be asked to enter your COA Key and/or Activate. – if asked for the Key, use the one on your COA sticker on the machine’s case (you may need to activate by telephone).
Once complete, run another MGADiag report and post back with the results.

It did not work. However, when I re-started the second time I didn't log-in first, I restarted from the Log-in window. It asked me for the COA Key, and I did put in the Product Key number that was found on a sticker on the bottom of this laptop. It didn't accept this key with message stating that Windows had been changed, and the stated that I needed to put in the Key for Windows Vista Ultimate, or do Windows Setup (through the disk I assume). I entered the Vista Ultimate key and it rejected it. Below is the new Diagnostic report.
Thanks for all your help so far. What can we try next?

While following the instructions for "Recreating the Licensing Store with the correct data", on Item 7 I obtained the following response: "A duplicate file name exists, or the file cannot be found"
I continued on with the instructions, but the outcome was the same as before. After restarting twice I still get the window where it tells me I must activate Windows, I put in the COA from bottom of laptop, it refuses that because it says that there's different version of Windows loaded and asks that I enter the Key for Windows Vista Ultimate (which is what I've been using), then gives me an Windows Activation error window with an error code of "0x8007000D".
Here's the diagnostic report again.

I tried to run the Mr. Fix-It from my desktop, and received this message: The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2738. I then tried with Norton Anti-virus/spyware turned off, then tried in safe-mode (installer doesn't work in Safe-mode). Needless to say, still got the message concerning the 2738 error code. The Gods are against me I think.
Your next suggestion would be much appreciated at this point.

A clean boot environment did not solve the inability to run the KB2230597, however..., the Fix-It for the Fix-It fixed it. I was able to enter the Product Key from my Windows Vista Ultimate disk, and my laptop accepted it by stating I now have a valid copy of Windows.
Hurray!
Thank you very much Mr Noel Paton.
