connecting WHS from Internet RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have installed windows home server in HP Proliant series server. Updated to Service Pack 2. Connected to LAN and internet. I have assigned a static IP. In the home server console under configuration, it automatically configured remote connection (detected router local IP (, its own static IP( and then router dynamic IP address for WAN interface) and then I have registered a "https://xxxx.homeserver.com" using windows live. My router is Xavi 7968 (Adsl router). UPnP is enabled. Problem is I cant browse my home server with "https://xxxx.homeserver.com" address. Inside my lan I can browse my server without problem (with address "http://server").

    Highly appreciate any help.

    Thank you.

  • If you haven't already done so you should try accessing your server from a location outside your home, such as a public library or coffee shop with Internet access. It may be that your router doesn't support a loopback connection.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Thanks Ken,

I tried to browse from public location. But still cant open the WHS homepage. But while I ping "grupolago.homeserver.com" (where "grupolago" is my registered name of the home server with windows live) I got the name resolved and get the ping request response from some IP. I am not sure if this IP is the WAN interface IP of my router or not as I am not at home right now and I cant access the router from outside.

Could it be because my router IP address is dynamic? On the other hand when I open WHS console >>configuration>>Remote Access>> The setting is good, router information is updated with latest IP address, everything seems fine..

    Waiting for some more hints.

  • If your router supports dynamic DNS, get a dyndns account and register that. This allows you not only to compare the results, but also have a second possibility to access your home server (although with a certificate warning), if the homeserver.com domain has some issues.

  • Surprisingly, things works fine after couple of days. I didn't change anything, it simply starts working after couple of days. Strange!!!!

    Thanks for your suggestions.
