HP OEM Windows 7 with Ultimate retail upgrade - Not a valid copy of Windows RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an HP desktop that came with an OEM license for Windows 7 64bit.  I subsequently purchased the upgrade to Ultimate.  Computer Properties page shows that Windows is activated and has the correct license key.

I recently had to replace the hard disk (identical make/model) and cloned the drives.  I've run with the cloned drive for about a month.  Now, I get "This computer is not running genuine Windows" popups.

I have backups and restore points and have current AV software.  Why am I getting the message, and what must be done to correct it?

    Thanks in advance,

    D. Ryan

I've done as you asked.  Here is the new MGADiag result:

Wow! I must admit to not really expecting to hit the solution first time! :)
Yes, your report looks good now.

As to how it happened, my first thoughts would be malware of some kind, although it could be the result of 'natural' corruption.

Keep an eye on the system for the next few days - if you get any unexpected results (specifically, check Windows Updates works properly), then come back here, or post in a more appropriate forum for the specific error e.g. the Windows Answers forums here.... http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7  (it would be a good idea in that instance to include a link back to this thread)

    Good Luck!

I have backups and restore points and have current AV software.  Why am I getting the message, and what must be done to correct it?

    Thanks in advance,

The highlighted error is an oddity - and it's one I've never seen before.
I suspect that it means major registry problems.

That said, the other errors may be fixable - and may also fix that one.

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

I've downloaded and installed the English only version at the link provided, and rebooted twice as asked.  See results of slui at end of MGADiag.  Here's the new MGADiag report

    No change :(

    Try this....
    Open an Elevated Command Prompt

    type the following
    net stop winmgmt

(hit the Y key and enter, to respond to the confirmation)
now you can copy and paste the rest -

    sc config winmgmt start= disabled
    cd %windir%\system32\wbem
    for /f %s in ('dir /b *.dll') do regsvr32 /s %s
for /f %s in ('dir /b *.mof') do mofcomp %s
    wmiprvse /regserver
    sc config winmgmt start= automatic

    Now reboot.

Run another MGADiag report and post the results.

    YAY! we're getting somewhere :)
At least we can now see the licensing details.

Now we have to try and work out which bad setting/registry is causing your problems with the files.

    First try this.
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Windows\System32 folder
find the Catroot2 folder there, and right-click on it - select Properties

in the General tab, clear the box beside 'Read-only (Only.....' by clicking in it until it's empty (it cycles around three values)
    Click Apply.
Accept any warnings that come up - if you get a 'Ignore/Ignore All/Try again' option, pick 'Ignore all'
Once complete (may be almost instantaneous), reboot, and run another MGADiag report.

  • It appears that all errors and diagnostics are now gone from the report.

Can you explain or speculate on how this could have happened?

    Good Luck!
