Drive Extender - How Does It Work RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I look at disk management on a WHS I see the following:
    Disk 0: SYS (C:), DATA (D:)
    Disk 1: DATA
    Disk 2: DATA
    ...
It seems that all the folder structures, filenames, etc are located on D: (using a HD scanning program). However, the actual data for these files seems to be on the other Disks. Is this how Drive Extender works? If so is the data always stored on the other disks or is some of it also stored on D? If this is not how it works then why are all the folder names and file names on D?

  • Data is stored in D:\DE and C:\fs\X\DE (X represents drive letter or drive number). The files and folder names in D:\shares are merely pointers to the actual file locations. More background info on WHS support site, check out the Technical briefs.
