  • Hi George,

I really appreciate your comments about the value of Microsoft's Certifications.

I'm sorry but I think that you're mixing different versions of Windows or Developers and their certifications and career paths. In the other hand, you correctly indicate, and I quote "that offers numerous career development opportunities to different professionals with different expertise in networking areas". In your mix, you talked about Window 2008 (70-642 et al), Windows 2003 (70-290/70-291) and a Developer track (70-553).

Indeed, there are two broad areas, operations and developing. These areas work together to generate IT Solutions. And you have worlds of career development in each area. Each area is vast. If you look at O*Net (http://online.onetcenter.org/find/industry?i=0&s=3 DOL-USA), in the time frame 2008-2018, there'll more need of Computer Support Specialits and Computer Systems Analyst then Computer Software Engineers (there's a lot more on that). If you add Network Analysts, you are in a very vast field.

You don't mention where you are in you certifications and what are your choices. Just to save time, please choose if you want to develop or operate. IT Certifications, like COMPTIA, Microsoft, Oracle, Cisco, ITIL, and many other are always improving rather than upgrading. As such, Microsoft, for example, is releasing an OS every 2 years, I mean, 2000, XP, 2003 2003 R2, Vista, 2008, 2008 R2 and 7; you got to move to keep the pace. Every certification may take you 2 years to complete. If you go to Exchange, is pretty much the same. SharePoint is moving. COMPTIA is, from 2009, expiring their certifications every 3 years to include the improvements on IT field.

My best recommendation for you is to move to Windows 2008, 70-642 and Windows 7, 70-680 ASAP. But keep an eye where do you want to specialize.

    Hope it helps,

    Alfredo Arizaleta

    Just begining
