Vista Validation - An unauthorised change was made to windows: 0xC004D401 AND 0x80070426 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there,

Yesterday my computer did a Windows Update and popped up with the following:

"An unauthorised change was made to windows. Error Code [0xC004D401] Security Processor reports system file mismatch error"

Overnight my computer has now given me the following:

"Optional Update Delivery not working. You may be a victim of counterfreighting. Windows must validate you copy of Vista, go online and resolve now."

Going online takes me to the Genuine Software PAge and presents me with the following:

This copy of Windows did not pass genuine validation.

Either an unauthorized change was made to your Windows license or a software program installed on this computer is not currently compatible with Windows Vista.

Access to the latest updates, all available features, and product support is reserved for customers running genuine Microsoft software. Until you activate and validate Windows, certain features of Windows Vista may be disabled.

I have run the diag program and below are the results:

I find this interesting because it has been valid since March! Also my control panel is unaccessible whenever this appears until restart. i have tried disk cleanup and that has achieved nothing. I rolled back my PC to before the updates and that seemed to have cured it until this issue this morning

Can you check if you have any of these listed programs installed?

    http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=897109&SiteID=25

Next, in order to try and resolve the 0x80070426 error:

Open an elevated command prompt (find Command Prompt in the start menu, right-click it and choose "Run as administrator") and type "net start slsvc" (and hit enter).

If you get the following message:

"The Software Licensing service is starting.
The Software Licensing service was started successfully."

try validating again.  You can do that by clicking "Validate Windows" here: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/

If you get a different message please run a disk check and then run (no quotes) "sfc /scannow" in an elevated Command Prompt.  And then try validating again.

     Thank you!

  • Thank you for the "fix": it worked like a charm! It had happened to me twice: the first time, I re-installed my whole machine! This way was MUCH simpler. Quicker, too, I might add. So...

If this shows up on ANYONE"S computer (yes, it could happen to you...), don't bother asking why: just Google to here, follow the simple steps Phil laid out, and voila! Thanks and Good Night!

(But while you lie there in the dark, don't even think about who or what authorised an unauthorised change on your personal machine...)

    Happy Halloween 2007!
