  • Question

  • our pc is several years old and we decided to run a system restore to factory settings to clean everything out.  it seemed to work and we did the following; windoes updates, install firefox, install avast antivirus, download world of warcraft;

we keep getting a message "anunauthorised change was made to windows" with the error code: 0xc004d401.  when i follow the link to the genuine windows site an run the validation it doesnt seem to do anything and the wait a few mins screen has sat for an hour now.

at some point i downloaded microsoft genuine advantage diagnostic tool and it says the sutff below.  my warrenty has expired with the manufacturer, at one point i tried to activate windows and similar things happened and now i cant seem to get into control panel.

    whats going on?

    thanks!  its already unchecked.

im not sure if everything is ok now, havent ahd any errors but that doesnt mean anything

You could well get errors in the near future, if Validation is borked.
This may be (again) because of Avast getting in the way.
To confirm this, Uninstall Avast again, then try validating. If it works properly, then we know that's the cause, and you'll have to either live with it until Avast fix it, or use another AV (MSE is my preferred freebie at present).

  • Either an unauthorized change was made to Windows files or a software program that is installed on this computer is currently not compatible with Windows Vista.

    Update or uninstall incompatible software.

After you update or uninstall potentially incompatible software, validate Windows again. Visit http://ga.microsoft.com , and then click Validate Windows .

If there are no known issues with the software already installed on your computer, you may have to remove any recently installed software (including Microsoft Updates) to resolve the problem.

To uninstall programs: 1.  Click the Start button.
    2.  Click Control Panel , click Programs , and then click Programs and Features
    3.  Select a program, and then click Uninstall .

Since you are not able to access control panel try to access Program & Features using appwiz.cpl from Run Command.

does this mean its ok for now?

Please try again to validate manually at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate - if it fails what is the EXACT error you receive?, or does it just 'hang'? or what?

The sort of malfunction you're getting is usually because of proxy server problems (I think - but cannot prove) I suggest that you check the LAN settings in Internet Options, and make sure that all proxies are disabled - see if that helps.
