Office not genuine message: Where to find my Office product key and how to enter it? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello, I bought my PC two years ago with Windows XP and Office XP Professional pre-installed (HP package).  I might have re-installed Office XP from a CD I used for my previous PC, but I actually don't think so.

I now get the message that my Office version is not genuine (Windows is OK on the other hand).  There is a Windows COA with a product key on the PC, but I can't find a product key for Office .  What can I do to pass the genuine check? Entering the Office product key? But where do I get it from?

Below please find the diagnostics results.
    Thanks in advance

  • Hello schrecko,

The products Windows and Office are totally different products, so do not expect any Windows product key to work with any Office installation.  Just not gonna happen.

Regarding reinstallation from Recovery, please do not make a move until you check with HP's/Compaq's documentation of the procedure to make sure you do it right....for example, if there is an operating system disc and an applications disc, you may only need to run the applications disc, and furthermore, may be able to select only the application that you want to recover.  Again, since each manufacturer does it a little differently, you have to do your homework before you dive in head-first :-)

If you were to acquire a genuine license for Office XP Professional, you might be able to change the product key from nongenuine to genuine using the steps in this MS KB:  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/895456  I cannot say from experience how closely the product "flavors" have to match for this to work.  If you do try this, please come back and let us know how it worked out :-)

  • hello schrecko,

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:

You wrote, " I might have re-installed Office XP from a CD I used for my previous PC, but I actually don't think so."

Based on what is installed now, I think that is actuall what happened.  The license for the current installation of Office XP Pro is a volume license, and that license was installed with a widely pirated and now blocked volume licensing key.

If this were your original installation of Office from HP, it would be reporting as an OEM license for XP Professional, and there would be no additional FrontPage program.

In order to put the original HP installation of Office XP back onto the computer, you would have to use whatever recovery or reinstallation means provided by HP.  That could be in the form of one or more HP-branded application recovery/reinstallation discs, or the same put onto a hidden recovery partition on the computer's hard disk drive, or could be an actual Microsoft hologrammed Office disc set.  When software is purchased preinstalled from the computer manufacturer, they are responsible for providing you with the materials and the CoA that enables you to reinstall the product if necessary.

If you do not have any of the above, you will not be able to order any replacements from Microsoft as Office XP has been "retired" for some time now.  You'd have to see what was available thru other sales channels and venues, but be careful with that because there is a ton of counterfeit Office software out there!

  • Thanks Dan,

So I have to re-install everything from the recovery? Since I have installed many programs and done much configuration that would take me very much time. Is there no way to just enter a product key? Maybe the key on the Windows COA on the PC can be used for Windows AND Office?

    Thanks in advance.
