Windows 7 activation problems after clean install. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

I am seeking advice on what to do as my product key is not allowing me to activate Windows 7 any more. I installed Win7 Pro a while back and it worked fine, i then decided to do a clean install of windows as i had quickly built up junk. I performed a clean install, and was plagued by various problems which i could not rectify. I then performed another clean install in the hope of trying to get it working again. The problems persisted and i contacted support which recommended yet ANOTHER clean install. The current installation works, however the product key has stopped working, most likely blocked.

I attempted to contact Microsoft support again, but apparently i'm not eligible for free support any more. Is there any way i can get a activated Windows without having to pay the premium? (again)

EDIT: Just to iterate, i have not installed this particular copy of Windows on any other system, i just want this one working.

And here is the diagnostic if it helps at all:

  • Hi Skynthos,

Do you still have the packaging that the Windows 7 came in?  If so, I believe you will see that it is an Upgrade version.

To install an Upgrade, you must start the Upgrade Install process from within the older copy of Windows (meaning you put the upgrade disk into the computer while the older copy of Windows is running).  This is known as an Upgrade Install

If you put the disk in the computer and then start the computer, this would cause the computer to boot from the install disk. This type of install is known as a 'Clean' or 'Full' Install.

I believe the reason the install worked before is because you did a Upgrade type Install and the reason it didn't work this time is because you did a Clean install.  An Upgrade Key will not work in Windows installed using the Clean Install process. This is actually a very common mistake.

Now, the reason it says the key is blocked is because your Windows is currently using a Keyless Install key.
When you did the Clean Install and then tried to enter an Upgrade Product Key, Windows would not accept the key.  Since you completed install, and your Upgrade Key was not used for the install, Windows used it's own "Keyless Install" key.  This key acts as a Trial key and allows the user to use Windows for 30 days.  Keyless Install keys are Blocked from Activation.    So the message you get saying your key is blocked is not talking about your Upgrade Key, but is refering to the Keyless Install key.

Ultimatly, to be able to use an Upgrade Key, the software must be installed using the Upgrade Process as I described above.

If you need any further assistance regarding this issue, please see the 'Install, Upgrade and Activation' section of the Windows 7 Answers Forum http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/windows7 or since you are using a Retail copy of Windows, you may still have time left on the 90 days of Free Phone Support that comes with Retail Windows. If you do still have free phone support time left and wish to use it, contact Windows 7 support at http://support.microsoft.com

    Thank you,

  • Hello Skynthos,

From your Diagnostic Report I assume that "however the product key has stopped working, most likely blocked." means you are getting some sort of error when you attempt to Activate.  If so, have you attempted to Activate by Phone?  If so, what happened?

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  • Hi, thanks for the reply.

Yeah i get an error telling me my product key is for update only(which its not because it worked before) and when i attempted to activate via the command line i got an error saying the activation server has rejected the key and it is blocked.

I have not tried to activate by phone, i could not find a number for the UK.

    Cheers,

    Levi.

  • Hi Darin,

Thanks for the help up to now. I bought Windows 7 Pro under the student offer scheme that is available in the UK. It said on the website that i would have to do a clean install in order to use Win7 Pro. I really don't know what i am going to do with it because this machine was not previously running Windows therefore i cannot upgrade from anything. I tried contacting support, but it tells me i am not eligible for any free support at all.

I will try to contact the support offered on the site that was used to download the student offer.

    Thanks,

    Levi.

  • I'm having exactly the same problem- I read I would have to do a clean install using the student license as well. I even asked at the fact that the packaging says "upgrade" in small print at the store and with the campus IT support at Indiana University; they said I can use the license for a clean installation. When I called Microsoft support, they said I could just click "cancel" on install and upgrade later online. All that did was took me into the trial for the OS and now I'm locked out again. What a frustrating experience. I'll have to try pursuing the options above, but it looks like I'm in the same boat as you, Levi-- stuck.
