Live Mesh Error: 00000040, 5 -- FIXED! RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Hopefully at this point none of you are seeing the 00000040, 5 error return now.  Turns out there was this server not talking to that server because the other server was seeing someone else, it's all a very sordid tale.

But after fixing some communication issues the problem seems to be fixed for everyone now.

If you are still seeing the error please let us know soon as possible either here, or via Connect bug or by sending email to lmprev@microsoft.com with the subject line: Error 00000040, 5.  So we can flag it quickly.

    Thanks all!

Nice! Mesh really DOES bring people, files, and now servers, together!

Laughed out loud at "it's all a very sordid tale"... Great explanation.

  • Glad to see the 000040,5 error has been fixed - I see no problems now. Well done chaps [I'm English ;) ].

A Point worth considering. 000040,5 actually doesn't mean a lot in itself. Is there any chace that:
    a) If this error - in reality - covers a multitude of (sordid) sins, could we have a better breakout of error definitions?
    b) Some textual description might help too. :)

    thanks.

    Hi,

If you have not done so already, please collect your Live Mesh logs and submit a bug so that we can look into this for you.  Instructions for collecting logs and submitting a bug are in an Announcement at the top of the forums.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • Have never seen this before on any of my 3 machinces running Mesh.  In the past hour, I've seen this on both my Vista and XP machines at home.  I was able to connect initially to each of them.  The XP one will kick me out with this error after a few minutes, but then will let me back in.  But, the Vista machine kicked me out once, and it's been 10 minutes and still not letting me back in.  In the notifier, it says it's "Online" but does not have a Connect To Device link.  (and has the little yellow sign with the exclamation point).  Looks like this was first discussed a while back and perhaps even fixed, so not sure if there's anything else I can do to help other than report that I'm seeing it... if there is, let me know.

  • I assume that the home machines are not located where you are currently connecting from. If you are at those machines physically, you might want to try exiting Live Mesh and restarting to see if that resolves the problem. Or, reboot the PCs to see if it resolves it. If neither action resolves it, submit your logs per the "how to fille a bug" announcement post at the top of this forum.

  • I have just started to receive the 00000040, 5 error today (didn't have that problem yesterday). I have emailed the log files to lmprev@microsoft.com as requested.

The only changes I made to one of the machines was to added a media center extender updated to the WinXP MC 2005 machine from Windows Update. I am not sure if that would effect it.

I will continue to try to connect throughout the day and let everyone know if it fixes itself.

Edit: Now it's working after about 7 attempts :0)

    Thanks for listening!

  • Hi, Brian.
I suspect that the mysterious 00000040, 5 error is due to a connection problem via the Live Mesh servers. Thanks for submitting the logs so that the team can have a look.

  • Thanks Stephen. They have also contacted me via email. I am going to send them the remote PC log files shortly once I get to that location, and I have sent them a screenshot.

I am also getting that error message again, so no luck on a permanent fix quite yet :o)

Stephen, were you not an MVP for another product awhile back? I don't recall what though. I was a Microsoft Publisher MVP for 8 years, and I think I recall you being with a different product.

    Thanks for the reply!

  • My original award when you and I were in contact was for MSN. When Windows Live was born my award was transitioned to Windows Live. My focus has been on OneCare for quite some time, but I'm still pretty visible in the newsgroups for MSN and Windows Live stuff. I'm learning Live Mesh along with everyone else, but was invited to help moderate here based on my rep in the OneCare forums. :-)
Nice to see you again, Brian.

  • Ah yes, now it's all coming back to me. Now I remember...MSN was all you had to say. Glad to see you are still at the grind (I just ran out of time and turned to new hobbies...golf being a big one).

BTW, no error today....so far so good. Keep up the great work Stephen.

The last time this happened, it was a server issue. Please let me know if you still see this and I'll poke my contact on the Live Mesh team.

  • Interesting. I've just started seeing it. The machine is not accessible, so hopefully it will fix itself over the next day or two.

Is the error persisting? That usually means a server issue.

  • Have been seeing this error for the last few days.

There have been many reports of problems in recent weeks, especially with remote desktop connectivity, that happen intermittently for some people. The errors are due to work being done on the back end servers.

Have you tried it today? I'm told that most of the work has been completed.
