  • Question

  • Key updater won't work, cannot validate, and COA from bottom of HP laptop also not 'valid.' Spoke to HP at length, who told me to talk to you. Not sure how to proceed.

  • Hello geek64,

Here is the page at HP that has support for your model of Pavilion Laptop:  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=308113

Click on the link in the "CD-ROM order page - Recovery Discs" part of the table to go to a page where you can order a set of Recovery CDs for your laptop.  The Recovery CDs are the best, least expensive way to put the genuine XP Home OS that shipped on the computer back onto the computer.  Once you use the HP CDs to put XP Home back onto the computer it will once again be Genuine and pass all WGA tests.

Be sure to backup and offload any data before running the Recovery CDs because typically the recovery process erases the user portion of the hard disk drive and replaces its contents with the contents of the CD.

Regarding Office, if you do not have a CoA, then you do not have a license to run Office.  If you need Office on the computer, you can purchase Office at many local and online retailers (but be very careful when shopping unfamiliar online retailers or auction sites as a huge % of software on these sites is counterfeit), or purchase and download directly from Microsoft.  You can also try the several free open source Office alternative Offic-like suites and applications.  You can also try the Office 2010 Beta for free at:  http://www.microsoft.com/office/2010/en/default.aspx

  • Here is my MGA Diagnostic Report. The problem is that the system (XP Pro) has a blocked VLK and the COA on the chassis is not validated. Purchased from a behemoth, trusted US computer retailer with software installed. Laptop is an HP. Spoke to HP today and they say they cannot unblock for me. I literally cannot work in this situation, and I cannot not work. Thoughts? Thanks.

  • Hello geek64,

Both the Windows and Office installed on the computer are nongenuine installations due to both being volume licensing installations installed with blocked volume licensing keys.

What version and edition of Windows is described on the Certificate of Authenticity affixed to the computer?

Do you have a Certificate of Authenticity for Office?

  • Well, let's leave your first remarks for later.

The COA affixed to the chassis passes all the inspection tests detailed on the 'how to tell' pages of the mcrsft site. The COA itself states XP Home. Every other place on the computer, it says XP Professional--well, here is an example:

OS Name    Microsoft Windows XP Professional
    Version    5.1.2600  Build 2600
    OS Manufacturer    Microsoft Corporation
    System Name    BRUCE
    System Manufacturer    Hewlett-Packard
    System Model    Pavilion ze4300 (DC975A)
    System Type    X86-based PC
    Processor    x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 1 AuthenticAMD ~1656 Mhz
    BIOS Version/Date    Phoenix Technologies Ltd. KAM1.39, 2/14/2003
    SMBIOS Version    2.3
    Windows Directory    C:\WINDOWS
    System Directory    C:\WINDOWS\System32
    Boot Device    \Device\HarddiskVolume1
    Locale    United States
    Hardware Abstraction Layer    Version = "5.1.2600.0 (xpclient.010817-1148)"
    User Name    BRUCE\Bruce Russell MD
    Time Zone    Pacific Standard Time
    Total Physical Memory    768.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory    401.12 MB
    Total Virtual Memory    1.62 GB
    Available Virtual Memory    1.10 GB
    Page File Space    953.61 MB
    Page File    C:\pagefile.sys

I have looked everywhere I know of to locate an Office COA. There is no disc. I assume there may be a file hidden, but I do not know how to access it.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Thank you very much, Dan. I appreciate the help.

As a business owner who has helped build a # of public and private companies, it is disturbing to find that a product made by two major players and purchased at a third, here in the US, not three hours from Redmond consists of a non-genuine OS. It does not inspire confidence. Had Lexus come to me after three years and informed me of the same, that, too, would not have begotten confidence.Great companies--Singapore/Cathay/Four Seasons/Lexus and many others consider the customer a personal responsibility. They take the experience as a personal reflection on them as people.  As I read the many discussions of blocked VLK nightmares. I am not impressed. Purely as a student of business. Microsoft's approach is wrong. Putting the problem back on the customer does not buy mindshare. It creates resentment, which is bad for sales and makes marketing much harder.
I think the other observation I have is that there doesn't seem to be any ownership about precisely what blocking VLK's is really all about. I don't know anyone at Microsoft, but my sense is that much of this VLK problem is a result of a desire to drive sales. And it is an effective method. If I ran sales or marketing there, I'd do the same thing. But I would be forthcoming about it. Our products are great, you need them, sometimes they last too long, as with computers, and we really can't be the business we want to be if we only sell to you every seven yrs. Fine. I'm all for it, and I bet most everyone else would be, too. But at least tell people what's going on. This mirage/quagmire/vortex thing about when/how/why VLK's are blocked, and by whom just creates bad karma, and Microsoft doesn't need any more of that than it already has.

  • Hello geek64,

Your computer did not ship from the HP factory with nongenuine installations of Windows and Office, and no manufacturer can control what the consumer may do to/with its product after it leaves the factory.

What is much more likely is that at some point the computer was "repaired" or "reloaded" by a well meaning friend, or by a local shop (Mom-n-Pop or bigbox), that had no motivation to maintain the properly licensed state of the computer and its software.

The WGA and OGA programs do have two strong motivations behind them:  the desire by Microsoft to reduce the malware scourge (part of which has its origins in pirated software as embedded malicious programs); and the desire by Microsoft to maximize the revenue from its intellectual property.

Rather than compare customer service apples to oranges which is inadequate when comparing an intellectual property company (Microsoft) with a tangible property company (Lexus/Toyota), lets compare the "customer service" of companies that deal with counterfeit product.  If you are sold a counterfeit copy of Office or Windows, send it to Microsoft; they will check it and if it really is a counterfeit, they will replace it for free with genuine product.  Now compare that to the customer service you encounter when you discover that you were given a counterfeit currency note in the normal course of a day's business.  Take the counterfeit currency note to your local bank, which is a licensed agent of the Federal Reserve, and see if they will replace the currency note for free with genuine product.

By the way, the VLK that was blocked on your computer with a code of Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage - 114 Blocked VLK 2 indicates that this VLK was issued by Microsoft to its own staff for internal use.  It and the corresponding VLK for Office 2003 are the two most widely pirated Microsoft products.

Please repost in your OWN new thread.
I suggest that you talk to the rental company - it's not your machine, so there's nothing you can do about it. They need to put a legal Key on the machine.
