Bought Vista home premium upgrade for my XP 64 system and activation key keeps telling me i havent upgraded? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Good morning (or afternoon depending where you are)

I bought Windows Vista Home Premuim upgrade from my local retailer to finally get rid of my horrible XP 64-bit and after lots of trouble trying to install it I finally managed it...

Then when I tried to activate it, it now tells me that I havent upgraded!?

I am very worried that after buying this from the retailer that its now going to cost me lots more to get it activated.....

When I click on what option I have after trying to activate it, It doesnt show me any option at all to get the correct validation key, and believe me I have looked everywhere!!

The closest thing I can find is to buy another activation key to use it on another computer, but this is not what I wish to do!! I want to run it on my home PC here!!

    Please help!!

  • Good Morning Spice,

Thank you for visiting the Genuine Advantage forum.  Your issue is related to Windows Product Activation.  In an attempt to assist I would like to provide some information which may or may not help.

    From the Desktop:

    a) If you have access to the Start button: Click the Start button, and type in "slui.exe 4" in the search field and then press the "Enter" key. This will bring up the Activate by Phone dialog window. Follow the steps provided by the window. The phone activation process should only take about 6 minutes.

    b) If you do not have access to the Start button: Reboot and login to Vista, a dialog window will come up. In that window, click the option "Access computer with reduced functionality". Once you do that, Internet Explorer or Firefox browser will open. In the address bar type "c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe" press enter, a new window will come up, type: slui 4 and hit enter and follow steps to Activate over the Phone.

Also you may reference the following site for various Telephone Activation Centers:
