WHS will not let me access a device.

Question

Vista has spoiled me. I am trying to install a driver for a CyberPower UPS. I would like to use their driver which I have stored on a shared WHS folder called \??????server\Software\CyberPower UPS\ppp122setup.exe. I wanted to use the CyberPower driver/program in place of the default UPS driver since it has additional features. Anyway, two questions - 1. Will the Cyberpower program work on WHS it seems to work everywhere else. 2. How do I get past the "Windows cannot access thes pecifiied device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access." I do not have a CD or DVD readed on this system and the file is too big for the old floppy. When I set the system up originally I think I installed the Nvidia Video Driver from a DVD. What do I have to do to get WHS to let me access a hard drive on WHS or any hard drive folder on my network? I know it is a dumb question but I've been using Vista too long and cannot find where or how to get permission on WHS to use my own machine! Brings back the frustrating XP days. Just kidding but I do need help.Wednesday, October 14, 2009 2:29 PM

Given that older disks are closer to end-of-warranty and you need more power to run them, I would go with two 500 GB drives. They are newer and have better disk density for read/writes. WHS will always try and write to other free disks before the system disk. But if you have duplicated shares, it will write to both - perfectly fine

"Maybe" is the best answer you're likely to get until you try it. :) Note: if this is on your production server, be cautious. It's possible to cause some serious issues if a piece of software turns out not to be compatible with Windows Home Server. My opinion is that if the default UPS driver works to allow you to get the server to shut down gracefully, you should stick with that.

You can usually get around this issue by copying the file to the server desktop, then right clicking it, selecting Properties, and clicking "Unblock".

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)Wednesday, October 14, 2009 3:41 PMModerator -
I guess your saying that when I set up WHS a year and a half ago it allowed me to install drivers from a CD/DVD drive and still would if I had one connected? That's the problem with this system it comes up running and then you forget about it for a year or so!! While I got your attention - I have 4 "old" 256GB SATA drives in in the WHS box and at least one of them is starting to vibrate and make some noise. If I were going to replace the disk drives and reinstall WHS what is the best drive configuration. Two WD 500GB Black drives or four 250GB drives? I don't think I need more that 1 TB of WHS storage - I'm only 50% full currently. Somewhere I read that the WHS software tries to stay on a separate drive from the backups and data - that would make one 500GB wasted? Opinions please.Wednesday, October 14, 2009 4:23 PM
