Vista Home Premium won't validate after restore RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I performed a system restore a couple of weeks ago and ended up with that "unauthorized change to Windows" message.  I tried restoring again, but there was no change.  I have not been able to validate since that time.  My control panel is also inaccessible.

After reading some posts, I did inspect the settings for the software licensing service and performed the actions recommended by the moderator in another post.  When I tried to force start as administrator, I got the message that the service was already running.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Here are the results from my diagnostic:

  • Hello visitor444,

While I have never seen this configuration of error codes before, one of the codes do suggests that the issue may be caused by a problem in Vista's Licensing Store.  Would you try the below steps and tell me if it resolved the issue?

    1) Open Internet Browser

    2) Type %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.

    3) Find the file CMD.exe

    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'

    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)

    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing

    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32

    9) Type net start slsvc

    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)

    11) Reboot Twice

    Thank you,

    Darin MS
