Invalid installation ID :( RRS feed

  • Question

  • So... My computer was damaged because it didnt have an updaed bios so i had to reformat my PC. In the installation process, I've had to activate my version of windows xp through the phone. The problem is that it says its invalid. Is it because this version of xp is from my brothers computer? The version is legit. I cant connect to the internet to activate because it says that i have to activate my pc if i even want to log in. Otherwise, it just shuts down my computer. The 9th series of numbers are just 2 numbers. is that the problem?

    example: ( installation id: xxxxx,xxxxx,xxxxx,xxxxx,xxxxx,xxxxx,xxxxx,xxxxx,xx )

I really want to get back onto my pc :[  . Btw im on my dads laptop right now.

  • Hello niceperson87,

Examples of versions:  Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows NT 4.0, Windows Me, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7.

Examples of Editions:  Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Media Center Edition, Windows XP Tablet Edition.

The real solution is, if your IBM/Lenovo computer has a Certificate of Authenticity for some version and edition of Windows affixed to the case, then contact IBM/Lenovo customer service or tech support to order Recovery Disc(s).

The Product Key only has 5 sets of 5 characters - what are you attempting to enter when asked for the key?
Does your PC have a COA sticker? - if so, what does it say about the Version and Edition (and SP level) of Windows for which it's licensed? (Do NOT post the Key!)
What Version and edition of Windows is the disk you used to install XP this time - what SP level is the disk?

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

...and that is why I asked the other questions in my original post.
That key should be self-activating, and cannot be activated over the phone.
You would appear to have installed XP using a Gateway recovery disk set - not an IBM one.
The OEM Key that came with the disk will never work on that machine.

...true, but since the machine appears to have been built between 2002 and 2004, the chances are that they will have no stock of disks.

@niceperson - The SP level installed here is SP 2.
You *may* be lucky, and be able to change the Product Key to the one on your COA sticker, using the Product Key Update  Tool here. - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/help/genuine/product-key
