  • Question

  • I get the same error as JeffW too. When I click run on the keyupdatetool, it goes through scanning the system step, then I get product key update failure message (error 0x800402c9). I have done the chkdisk step and have plenty of disk space. I have purchased the Windows Genuine Advantage Kit but cannot update the key.

    Much appreciate any help.

  • John,

Please run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Test (MGADT) so that I may analyze the results.

By clicking the link below, you will download the MGADT.  Then click the Run button. Then click the Run button again. Then click the Continue button to perform the diagnostic. The Windows tab should show, click the Copy button to paste your report to the clipboard.  Then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum by adding a post in it and pressing Ctrl V (to paste the text). Clicking the OK button will clear the Diagnostic window. Here is the download link:

Please tell us about the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) for your copy of Windows XP.

    1. What edition/version of Windows XP is titled?

    ·         Home

    ·         Professional

    ·         Media Center

    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4. Please provide the customer scenario you are experiencing.

    5. DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for, see this page to reference your COA:

NOTE: The data collected with the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you. The information can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

    Thank you.

  • John J Perry Jr,

The Product Key updater utility has to deal with all manner of corrupted files and tampered installations of XP and cannot be reasonably expected to fix every installation of XP.

The best you can do is to ensure that the utility is being granted full access to the internet by your protective programs, ie, antivirus/firewall/antimalware/etc.  While running, the Updater has to have constant contact with Microsoft servers to check and validate over 6,000 OS files.

If the PK Updater simply cannot update your key, your best course of action is to wait for receipt of the genuine MS hologrammed CD that is also being sent to you, and upon receipt, set aside some quality time to back up and offload your data, then do a full clean installation of XP onto your computer.

    Good Luck! :-)
