help with a recent "mandatory" update

  I downloaded the prescribed (notified) updates that came across my toolbar at the bottom of my screen.    As a result of these downloads, i am now running IE 8 which I don;t want and Media Player 11 which I don;t wabt, but more importantly, all my desktop items from my old computer are "gone" in that they are not visible under my user account.   For some reason, though, I can find the old stuff, but it comes up in compatability mode and only if I go into the "recently changed" folder - and not all my documents are in there either.      How can I restore all the old systme files so as to get my materials back where I want them.       Thank you.
