Two computers, uninstalled Office on one and installed on another so only 2 copies of Office Running RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently brought a new laptop, upgraded this to Windows 7 Ultimate.  On my old laptop I uninstalled Office and then installed it on my new laptop.  The other copy resides on an old machine, so I still only have 2 copies running.  So why a I getting Office not genuine message.  Surely I'm complying with the licence rules - 2 copies!

I can understand your confusion because normally, a full retail license for Office Professional 2007 would indeed permit you to install Office on two computers, your desktop and your laptop.  Unfortunately, you do not have a full retail license for Office Professional 2007, you inadvertently purchased a nongenuine copy of Office Professional Plus 2007, a Volume Licensing product.

Your installation of Office Professional Plus 2007 on your Toshiba laptop computer is a nongenuine installation.  It is a volume licensing installation that was done with an Invalid Volume Licensing Key.  An Invalid Volume Licensing Product Key is one that was generated by software pirates using a program called a key generator, or KeyGen for short.  This product key was never officially issued by Microsoft, making it Invalid.

Normally, legitimate users of Volume Licensing editions of Office are associated with larger business, educational, or governmental organizations.  If that's you, please contact your organization's IT support staff for further assistance.

If your use of this installation of Office Professional Plus 2007 is not associated with a larger business, educational, or governmental organization, and you purchased the installed copy of Office Professional Plus 2007 thinking that it was a retail license for Office Professional 2007 to be sold to individual consumers, it is likely that you are a victim of software piracy and/or counterfeiting.  As an individual consumer, you should never have been sold Volume Licensing (VL) materials such as the VL installation disc and you certainly should not have received a Invalid Product Key.  You should have been sold Genuine retail licensed software.

If so, your first course of action is to confront your seller with this information and demand a full refund.

If the seller refuses to help, please file a piracy report at www.microsoft.com/piracy.  Also, depending upon whether you received "high quality" counterfeit materials, you may qualify for the Office Complimentary Offer or for the Office Genuine Advantage discounted offer.  Please see the FAQ here:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EKNAC  If you think that you qualify for the Genuine Office Offer, apply for the Offer thru the Learn More Online link that the OGA Notifier is displaying.

One other possibility is that at one time your computer did have a Genuine installation of Office installed, but for some reason it was replaced with the current installation which is nongenuine.  This could have happened if you took your computer to a repair shop and they reinstalled Windows and/or some or all of your programs.  You Get Genuine once again by uninstalling the current nongenuine installation of Office and using your Genuine Microsoft hologrammed Office installation CDs, along with the genuine Product Key found on your Office Edition's Certificate of Authenticity or yellow-orange Proof of License label, to put back the genuine installation of Office you may have already had on the computer.

  • The software was purchased via Amazon.co.uk, so I have to assume this is a reputable seller and the software is not counterfit.

My Toshiba did have a trial copy of Office 2007 on it, however I upgraded the Operating System from Windows 7 Starter to Windows 7 Ultimate.  Could this be the issue.

I am somewhat reluctant to spend more money getting another copy of Office 2007 when I am positive the copy I have is genuine.  Your advice appreciated.

  • The software was sold by Citrus Software on Amazon Marketplace.  I have the receipt dated 13th Nov 2008 and have contacted the reseller for a refund.  I await their response.  In the meantime I need to continue using my copy of Office but it now tells me my 15 days are up.  Without this software I am unable to run my business.  Your help appreciated.

  • Hello Alcaria Fria,

Sellers on Amazon Marketplace are independent vendors separate from Amazon itself, the same way that sellers on eBay are not in any legal way associated with eBay, and the venues hire armies of lawyers to ensure that what their vendors do cannot come back to haunt Amazon or eBay.

Because the installation on the new laptop is a new installation that was refused activation by the Microsoft servers, this installation will indeed "time out" and revert to a reduced functionality mode just as the typical Trial installations of Office will do.  On the other hand, the installation that is on the "old machine" will continue to work normally because even if it is identified as a nongenuine installation, once installed and activated it is Microsoft's policy to not have the software de-activate itself or lose any functionality whatsoever.  So in this interim period, you can still use the older computer and its installation of Office.

I can understand your predicament because you are caught in the middle.  In the meantime, I would suggest downloading and installing a Trial installation of Office 2010 http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/try/.  This will work for 60 days (IIRC) which should go a long way toward tiding you over.  If you do not hear from and get satisfaction from your Vendor soon, you will just want to forget about them and submit your counterfeit materials to Microsoft and apply for the complimentary replacement as described in the FAQ and in my response above.

You wrote, "I am somewhat reluctant to spend more money getting another copy of Office 2007 when I am positive the copy I have is genuine."  It is not genuine.

You also wrote, "My Toshiba did have a trial copy of Office 2007 on it, however I upgraded the Operating System from Windows 7 Starter to Windows 7 Ultimate.  Could this be the issue."  No.

  • Thanks for the advice.  I think I will download the trial version of Office 2010.  This will do me for 60 days as you suggest.  Fingers crossed this has Outlook on it as this is the part I use most.  On my old machine I have already uninstalled Office so can't use that and have indeed given the machine to a friend as  no longer needed it.

Why is it that consumers always end up in the middle thinking they have done everything to protect themselves.  I suppose the only way to ensure a product is genuine is to buy from yourselves direct in the future.

  • Hello Alcaria Fria,

Office Home and Business 2010 and Office Professional 2010 have Outlook.  Office Home and Student 2010 does not have Outlook.

Counterfeiters got very good at duplicating Office 2007, so the only way for an average consumer to protect themselves with Office 2007 purchases is to buy from a source that you would think would never in a million years sell counterfeit software.  That would mean purchasing only from the most respected brick-and-mortar retailers and of course from Microsoft itself, and foregoing the lure of discounted prices from backstreet retailers and ephemeral online sellers.

  • I have downloaded the trial version of Office 2010 and luckily it does have Outlook.  I have also uninstalled the 'non genuine' copy of MS Office 2007 which I have.

I have yet to hear from the firm I bought it from but at least I can now work for the next 6 days with no issues.

    Thanks for you help.

  • Contacted Citrus Software who refuse to refund my money or supply a genuine copy of Office 2007.  Have written back to them quoting your information.  What more can I do?  Amazon is a reputable online shopping house and yet they have pirates operating under their banner.

The information at this link applies to Office as well as Windows:  http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinewindows7/thread/4b6f01a4-4475-4e3b-a4e4-6ec921b785b8

I would send your materials in for evaluation and replacement.

Don't forget to write to Amazon and give them a piece of your mind about their sellers.

  • Wrote to Amazon direct re my copy of Office 2007 and they refunded my money in full in 2 days.  They are also investigating the seller.  A result for me but really the refund should have been done by the seller not Amazon.

  • Hello Alcaria Fria,

    Very good :-)

Presumably you are retaining the counterfeit materials in case Amazon wants you to send the materials to them.
