Hello Richard, Defender cannot be uninstalled from Vista through Programs and Features and I don't recommend attempting to manually uninstall it. I suggest contacting support for help with your installation issue. This error may occur if Windows Defender is installed on your computer when you try to install OneCare.
To troubleshoot this issue:A. Remove Windows Defender from your computer.
1. In Windows Vista, click Start, click in the Start Search box, type appwiz.cpl, and then press ENTER.
2. In the Currently installed programs list, click Windows Defender, and then click Remove.
B. Optional: If Windows Defender doesn't appear in the programs list, remove it manually.
1. In Windows Vista, click Start, and then click in the Start Search box.
2. Copy the following commands, paste them into the Run box, and then press ENTER after each command:- * msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}
* msiexec /x {536F7C74-844B-4683-B0C5-EA39E19A6FE3}

Note that deauzif’s advice was taken verbatim from the OneCare Online Help solution for this specific error message. Yet the Knowledge Base article for this error message specifically advises not to attempt this with Vista: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930162
Perhaps this inconsistency needs to be addressed.

Thanks, Greg. Yes, we've noticed a few other oddities in the KB articles of late.
I should add that one other reason we've seen for this error is that the PC is infected with malware when trying to install OneCare.

Ow sorry, so does that mean that, that solution is not advisable and that Online Help must be edited in some way...

Yes, I believe that the current online help regarding removal of Defender from Vista is incorrect.
