Illegal Software at School? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi!

Being the somewhat intrigued person I am, I decided to go have a look at the software at school and see whether or not they get away with running illegal software or whether each PC is licensed. (We have over 300 computers in school).

SO, I ran a peice of diagnostic software I normally run and this is what it finds.

    (I the image fails:

    Security : 128 Bits

    Product Key : *****-*****-HXGR2-KJY9G-7CVW8

    Product ID: 76487-640-0456517-23128)

Now, correct me if Im wrong but is this Product Key not genuine? and also, they have blocked access to teh Validation site as well as uninstalling the required files for validation.

The same happens throughout school with various blacklisted keys installed on hundreds of computers. Even the staff laptop I used today has the 'Devils Own' key attatched to it!

Is there a reason for this? Is it illegal? And would you like further information on this matter submitted to the WGA Team?

  • Thank you.

I have sent a email using the like you suggested along with the details of the school etc.

Can anyone confirm my suspicions the above Key is infact not genuine?

  • Hi Jwharmsby,

Thank you for the post. I did a check on the Product ID, that you provided. It is a Volume License Key (which is normal for a school) and does come up as a good key.

I am assuming the OS being used is Windows XP.   Windows Genuine Advantage Validation is not required for Windows XP (except for downloading from download.microsoft.com and a few other Microsoft sites)

Blocking access to the Validation site, on their network, is perfectly within their right. And since the site is blocked, they wouldn't need to uninstall the files required for Validation, because thoses files would never have been downloaded in the first place.

    To answer your questions:

    Q: Is it Illegal?

A: I don't know - The better question is, "are they running Genuine Microsoft Software?" Given the Product ID you provided, I would say it is Genuine.

Q: Is there a reason for this?

A: Again, I don't know, but I don't need to know. As long as they are running Genuine Microsoft Software and using it in accordence with their license aggremment and/or EULA, it is not my (or Microsoft's) concern how they use it.
