Sign in to photosynth fails from ICE RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've just downloaded ICE 2.0.2.0 (64-bit) and now can't sign in to my Microsoft account from ICE prior to export to Photosynth.  I can sign in to my Microsoft account from www.photosynth.net but not from ICE.  When I click 'sign in' on the ICE screen a dialogue pops up for me to enter my email address and password, I click the "Sign In" button - the ICE panel has a think and then reverts from "signing in" to "not signed in".  I know the email and password are correct because I've copied and pasted from a common source to both photosynth.net and ICE to eliminate typos.

ICE also failed to sign in to photosynth with the password I previously had set on my microsoft account.  I reset the password and the new one works correctly with photosynth.net but not with ICE.

HELP, please  I really wanted to get a photosynth panorama published today.....  !

  • Greetings, Viragored,

Sorry that no one has replied to you yet. I'm just your fellow user, but perhaps I can help.

By any chance do you have two-step verification enabled on your Microsoft Account?
You can check this in your web browser at account.live.com/proofs/Manage

Since ICE 2 is so new, I don't know whether the following applies to it or not, but the Photosynth desktop application will not sign into a Microsoft Account with two-step verification enabled, even if you put in the correct email address and password.

    There are two solutions:
    1Deactivate  two-step verification
(Not very safe anymore, unfortunately, but it will allow you to use your same username and password on every Microsoft Account login as you would expect.)

2Create an app-specific password for your account to use with ICE (if you wish to leave 2-Factor authentication enabled).
You can do so at account.live.com/proofs/AppPassword
(This will mean that your password that you use when signing into ICE will be different than signing in with your Microsoft Account elsewhere.)

If you do have two-step verification turned on and wish to keep it turned on but don't like having to receive your security codes at alternate email address or by SMS, you may also want to install Microsoft's identity verification app on your smartphone or tablet.

  • Thanks for pointing out two-step verification as a possible cause, Nate.  However, it turns out that ICE works just fine with two-step verification.  I just tested it with my own Microsoft account, and had no problem.

Viragored, does the problem persist even after you have shut down and restarted your computer?

  • Eric, are you telling me that you are:
    a) using an app password to sign into ICE 2 or
    b) using your normal MS account password that you would type into any MS web login form
when you have two-step verification enabled on your Microsoft account?

  • Hello Eric,

I also have the problem that ICE says "could not sign in" with Photosynth. With the photosynth programm I can log in.

I made an new accout to test if my accout is the problem but the new one also has the same issue.

Test was with Ice 2.0.3. 64Bit on a win7 and win 8.x system.

Do you have any idea what the problem can be?

    thanks and greets

    Sebastian

  • Hello NateLawrence

I think i find the bug finally and it is one of the most important solution for this problem.
Through a large number tests by myself,i found the bug from the Microsoft account(The live ID),the user's name which was be showed as "Display name".I am an Chinese man,I used Chinese character input into "Firstname" and "Secondname" before,in this case,i could not sign in ICE anyway. But if i used English character,i could sign in  successfully.I guess that ICE account systerm can't support other character except English,so that if somebody have this problem, should check the "Display name" in Microsoft ID.
Forgive my poor English.I don't know if you can understand or not.

  • I had a similar problem, today. Not only was the login not working from the PhotoSynth software, but from ICE as well. I didn't found my solution in this thread, but I was able to help myself. So, in case some might find it useful, here is my solution — though, I think this is a bug and should be fixed.

My Microsoft Live account was brand new and I only used it to log in into support.microsoft.com before — through which I also created it. After the login error occured, I logged in onto live.com directly to see if there was some setting I could tinker with. I was asked some question before I could do anything — something about finishing the set-up of my account as I recall — and afterwards all was good.

It looks like the incomplete Microsoft Live account at live.com was the problem in my case.
