Page cannot be displayed message in IE but can ping websites

Hi,

I have an issue where I am able to ping common websites (www.yahoo.com, www.google.com, www.cnn.com) from a command prompt; I receive replies and no packets are lost,
but I still get the message "page cannot be displayed"; in my frustration I installed Firefox to see if maybe that was the issue, but no such luck. I have installed an uninstalled/reinstalled with no luck in getting a browser to open successfully. I am running AVG antivirus software.
