Multiple Problems with Vista

Question
-
I have been experiencing many problems over the last few days. Two days ago I was experiencing a pop-up that told me that there was a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime error that pointed to the program C:/windows/system32.spolsv.exe I have no idea what this is, but other people seem to have problems similar to mine when they are running specific programs. I, however, will receive this message without any open programs. I tried restoring to before the last Windows Update and it worked for a day, but today it all came back. I tried restoring again and now I don't get past the boot-up before I get an error message that tells me that there was an unauthorized change to windows that will lead to limited functionality. It provides a link to validate Windows as genuine, but I keep failing this test. After the failure, I have been given instructions to follow that includes clicking the Start button. I have NO STARRT BUTTON... I am locked out of everything except for IE. Please Help...
Thanks,

Hi bizzie094,
First off, how is the file (seen in the runtime error) spelled? spolsv.exe or spoolsv.exe
The reason I ask is because:
spoolsv.exe: When I do a search for this file at support.microsoft.com, I find a number of help docs, do this does appear to be a proper file although I have seen sites that state there is a worm that uses the same name.
spolsv.exe: When I do a search for this file at support.microsoft.com, the only doc I find is http://support.microsoft.com/kb/258801/en-us "How to eliminate a computer virus". So I assume this is not a good file and may be the cause of the Reduced Functioaltity. If this is the spelling the file in the runtime error, I would suggest either trying to follow the support doc on How to eliminate a computer virus, contacting Vista support at support.microsoft.com or consider reinstalling Vista.
If the spelling is with 2 "O's" please download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool. To do this in Reduced Functioaltity mode, in Internet Explorer or Firefox browser, type http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 in the address field and hit enter. When the dialog comes up asking to "Save" or "Run", click "Run". Next Click 'Continue" then the Windows tab, click the "Copy" button. Next, type http://forums.microsoft.com/genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2266299&SiteID=25 into the browser address field. This will bring you back to this forum thread. Click the "reply" button than paste the report into the post. This should give me enough information to be able to suggest a resolution to your issue.
Thank you,

I am having problems with Vista. Several pc games we enjoy playing on our computer no longer work. Online games continue to work but we recieve multiple and differing errors each time we attempt to run any game that has been downloaded to our pc reguardless of size and including games specifically for Vista systems. Can anyone help us? Some errors say things like "DRM activator not working" others say things I've never even heard of. I can't find too much information by googling the terms either. We have also tried reseting to a date before the problems began but with no success. Please help. We really want to be able to enjoy our computer as we did a few weeks ago, before the problems.

I have the same error message, it is C:\windows\system32\spolsv.exe with only one o. It only causes my webbrowser to shutdown, otherwise I have full funcionality. I am running Windows Vista Pro, with norton antivirus (always live updated) and webroot spysweeper.
Is there any follow up on this problem? It says there is a compatability error. Would the entire error code be helpful??
