Backup Problems with Windows Server 2003 SBS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Good morning all,

I am having a real strange error occurring in a backup log for a client of mine. Background on their setup is as follows,

Currently have a Dell Server PE-SC1420

With a Dell ™ Power Vault ™ 100T DAT 72 Backup tape drive

Running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Small Business Server Edition

    With Services Pack 2 installed

Backup is about 33GIG of data, and full device compression is enabled, and they are 72GIG tapes compressed.

Their last full and complete backup was on Monday 12th November 2007.

They run a back script from windows management tools inside Windows server 2003 which calls a backup script from C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\Backup\Small Business Backup Script.bks. They run this backup every week day at around 12:00AM.

I have included a copy of the last backup log from the server that ran last night and ever since the 12th November 2007 the backup has being failing every night.

From what the logs are showing it is failing every time the system goes to start back the system state it seems to fail and give the flowing error in the event log, “The requested media filed to mount. This operation was aborted. The operation was ended.” Which seem strange to me since it has backup the whole of the C: and D: drive as well as the whole of the exchange server database to the tape and then failed at the system state.

I have used the Dell cleaning tape to clean the tape drive. We have also put in new Backup tapes and this error still continues. On Saturday 17th I cleaned the tape drive twice with a new cleaning tape and place in a new backup tape and ran a small file backup and it completed successfully so I then ran a system state backup on the system and it completed with no errors, so I then ran the full backup and it failed at the same point again.

I then ran another full system back and instead of going to the tape drive I sent it to a file on another network server share and that completed successful.

I rebooted the server on Monday 19th November and let the backup run again and it failed at the same point.

    Any suggestions on this problem.

    Doug

  • Having the identical problem.  Started end of November as well.  DLT 40GB tape.  I've learned that the "SERVER\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group" refers to the Exchange data store.  I've ruled out documented problems like having circular logging enabled in Exchange (it's disabled by default.)

Any help/thoughts?  If I get this resolved, I'll post resolution.

  • Peter,

After another few days of extensive research and test, i have found out that it is the Tape drive unit at fault. I found this out by downloading a copy of Dell Tap utility software and running some extensive test on the tape unit which all the test came back with errors or problems, it seem the tape drive will backup some of the data but after it gets past a certain point the drive starts to slip and mis write info and then start to file, or at lease these are the errors i am getting from the Dell utility.

My suggestion is to run the Dell software and see what report you get from it, if the test come back as failed, call Dell and have ship you out a replacement. This is where I am currently at with Dell.

Here is the weblink for the software from Dell.
