Media Center Recording on Windows Home Server RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I know this is a touchy subject as WHS is supposed to be a light, eco-friendly backup and home storage hub, but I think there is some potential for limited media center functionality in a Ultimate edition.

The way I look at it, I have four computers (Home Office, Laptop, Media Center, and a WHS) and the two boxes on all the time are my WHS and my Media Center. It would be great if I was able to bulid a small-form-factor Media Room PC that would not have to have dual tuners and require high-end cooling.

If my WHS box was able to record shows (and allow me to load a tower with 4+ HD tuners) so they can be viewed later over the network on my media room PC or my other PCS, that would be great!! This may come as a big supprise, but when I am watching "live" TV I am normally using my HD Cable DVR so viewing from the Server would not be necessary.

If the Windows Media Center recordings were formated to play on the new Samsung TV and Blu-Ray players, then I might be able to do-away with a dedicated Media Center PC (if I can do without the better MCE interface and an Internet browser, so probably not).

Yes, all of that would be great.  However, doing what you want is unsupported.  You can try it if you like, just know that if you have problems, you will probably have to figure it out on your own.  My suggestion would be to file a suggestion on Connect (or find another one on there and verify it).
