Microsoft Money 2004 in Windows 10 RRS feed

  • Question

  • My Money programme has suddenly failed to display although I believe the file has opened.

I installed Windows 10 some months ago and Money 2004 has worked fine until now.

I need to know how I can open and read my files and what other software is available instead of Money which will hopefully be able to use these files.

  • I would reinstall Money 2004 from your disk if you have it. If not, install Money 2005 UK, presuming your Money 2004 was UK version, using the install file pointed to by what is currently the second post in this forum.

  • First locate your Money data file or files - they will have the extension *.mny or *.mbf for the backups. Copy them somewhere safe. Twice. Then post as much detail as you can about what precisely happens when you launch the Money programme. Do you get the Money launch screen? Can you open or create another file? and so on. Detail detail. Since we know that Money works with Windows 10 the problem is probably machine specific. The only prog I know of to open Money files is Quicken but a Google search reveals this is anything but straightforward and maybe impossible with 2004 files.

  • My Money backup file is on both my main hard drive and an external hard drive which I use purely for backing up to.  I have copied my Money file (.mny) to the external drive at your suggestion.  I presume that the ones on my external drive (.mny and .mbf) might be considered to be in a safe location?

When I try to open Money I briefly see what I imagine is the launch screen which is only small, about three inches by two.  This quickly disappears, as it always has done, but then there is no replacement full screen.  If I click again on the Money icon on my desktop it tells me that Money is running.  I can shut this down by right-clicking on the icon and selecting 'close window'.

As the initial operating window is not displayed I'm not able to do anything else.

  • Thank you Cal Learner,

I uninstalled my Money 2004 and, using the original disc, have reinstalled the software.  It appears to be working perfectly.

    Thanks again.
