Does SyncToy work as a backup system and check date modified of files to increase speed? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have now tried a many different back systems, while being billed by our IT department for all these "ideas". I've used Synctoy at home on my personal PC many for many years. Now i would like to try it for our office server.

So my question is, does SyncToy identify ONLY modified, or new, or rename/deletes and copy those over to the synced folder? I want to stay away from FULL blown copy's over every day as we have roughly 400GB of data we need to backup to our external Lacie 2TB USB 2.0 drive. We just ran it last night and took 20 hours to copy.

So can Synctoy only copy over the renames, deletes, New files, and modified files? If the file on both sides of the sync are the same, just ignore it and move on to the next file?

Thanks for any help, its much appreciated!!

  • Yes, your right, focus on increasing changes is this tool's goal.
Just please keep in mind, SyncToy will also consider files ' properties changes and file modify datetime changes as updates, these also can triger syncing action too.
