WHS Remote Access Win 7 Ultimate RRS feed

  • Question

  • Arrrgh.  40+ hours attempting to get Remote Access to work.  HP MediaSmart Server EX487, Win 7 Ultimate, D-Link 655 Router, SURFboard Digital Voice Modem SBV5222

I've tried configuring the HP MediaServer to get Remote Access to work.  All else seems to work.  I have been unable to do a remote access.  I even migrated from Win 7 Home Premium to Win 7 Ultimate which reportedly allows for the HP server connection.  But to no avail.  The HP configuration fails at "connecting with website" but passes the connecting locally and configuring the router UPnP settings.

I have a broadband modem (SURFboard Digital Voice Modem SBV5222) connected to the internet cable.  It then goes to my D-Link 655 Router.  The HP MediaSmart is connected to the Router via an Ethernet cable.

I've tried port forwarding (per portforward website) and dozens of other issues.  It appears (random WAG) that the problem is the "dual" routers having the broadband cable VOIP modem in-line.  But how do I fix that without losing my VOIP telephone service?

After getting a new modem and disconnecting the old VOIP modem, I can access it from a remote site (e.g. brother's house).  But I cannot access it (FireFox, Chrome, Explorer) here via any browser nor does it "configure" in the HP MediaSmart settings. I still get the failure: "website is not available from the internet".  It does pass the first two checks (available locally and configure route with UPnP) but not this 3rd one.

  • If it's not working locally, but is working remotely, blame your router, write it off as a minor annoyance, and move on. :) Or buy a new router, one which fully supports a connection between an internal (LAN) IP and it's external (WAN) IP address.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
